Sensitivity returned

I had cataract surgery on my left eye 6 days ago. At first I was sensitive to daylight and bright screens but that wore off by the third day but has now returned.  On day 3 I had no pain but my eye feels a bit sensitive now.  I use Pred Forte and Chloramphenicol drops twice daily.  Before the surgery I used Systane eye drops for dry eyes and am wondering if it is safe to use these now just after surgery.  They may make my eye feel more comfortable.  Has anyone used dry eye drops post surgery and did it make a difference?

Hi Fandango, yes, use your lubricating eye drops.

When you have a cataract removed, they are removing a lens with an automatic filter that filters the sunshine, so that bright light doesn't bother you.  With your artificial lens - your implant, it doesn't have a filter, so you may find that wearing tinted specs might help.  I use [and have done for many years] phtotochromic lenses in my specs, they darken in sunlight.

I have used lubricating eye drops for years too and also use a lubricating gel at night.

What country are you in maye74?

Fandango, you should telephone your Consultant's secretary and ask, especially if maye74 is saying something completely different from what I was told by my Consultant.

Of course! You should ask yoir doctor and be clear about The prescription. Last week my doctor change my antibiotic bcoz the other one seems unresponsive to me. (Levofloxacin, in which i found out is damaging one's kidney)

    Hi Fandango

I had cataract surgery on my left eye 6 days ago too, so snap!  I really sympathise, I am having difficulty being without my Systane and Opticom drops.  I have allergen problems (live in Norfolk, not good for allergies at all, but lovely!) and blepharitis.  I asked straight after surgery when I could use my eye drops and baby shampoo but they said not until the post op check which is on Tuesday.

I have been in a lot of pain, I got badly bruised when my eye lids were clamped because of deep set eyes.  My eyes are getting more and more blurry and it feels like a build up of pressure behind the eye.  I contacted the eye clinic and they are fitting me in at 8.45 a.m. in the morning thank goodness.  I am probably making a fuss about nothing but it is quite frightening when your eye is involved isn't it?

When is your post op?  Perhaps you should ring your Eye Clinic if only to find out when you can use your own drops or to check out your sensititvity problem.

Let me know how you get on.

    Love

after my surgery(july 2),my post op consultation was july3, july8 and on aug 3. day1 i compalin about the flickering @ my left side. i can only discribe it as a misplaced contact lens, that i see the rims of the contact at the left outer border of my lens. and as of this writing, i still feel/see the same. and its difficult to be on the road at night coz the flashing of headlight and tower lights is giving me a headache. my doctor explanation is that it will wear of, give it time to heal. one collegue says(she had cataract removal) it is normal and the flickering in the side of my eyes is prob'ly tears/water that will dry out after a month or two. but my question also is what if it wont? and it will worsen? and if irreversible? Im contemplating to have another doctor check my eyes already.what scares me is the thought that if they try to correct this, it will only get worse because god knows you will never know the truth from your doctor. Before the surgery, they never discuss about the flickering and all.(advantages and disadvantages of having the surgery) they only inform you about the 1 percent that lose eyesight DUE to "infection".

oh, and theres this list of things that you cannot do for the 1st month:

i want to share this with you coz i think its important.

      -dont bend for 1 week

-dont splash water into the eyes (2 weeks)

      -don't rub/press your eyes (1 month)

-avoid carrying children(they might poke your eye)

      -avoid strenous work(2-3 weeks)

      -avoid gardening (2 weeks)

-avoid deep frying (simple cooking yes)

-avoid water entering the eyes when taking a bath

(try go to the salon to wash your hair)

-dont apply make up (2 weeks)

      -avoid swimming (1 month)

      -avoid sports (1 month)

      -don't exercise for 1 month

-dont lift heavy objects for 1 month

-avoid wearing spectacles and contact lens for 1 month

       (i thought cannot wear contacts?)

-don't sleep face down and in your side for 1 month.

my immediate question was avoid and don't is two diiferent things.

it says dont press or rub your eyes for a month yet you can apply make up after two weeks? and it sounds crazy for me already.

i will be pressing my eyes if I'll removed that make up? :p

i still dont do all this things coz i rather be safe than regret later. its my eyes we are talking about.

i feel bad that my doctor only gave me 2 weeks hospital leave when everytime i go outside my house there's always the fear of some dirt getting into my eyes or objects sad

thanks. that's all for now. smile

      Hi Maye

Gosh what a lot of don't you were given.  It is amazing how every Eye Surgeon differs in what they let you do!   I was allowed makeup after one week, could bend down straight away and shower.  The only things not to do were heavy lifting and my exercises, only walking.

I had an emergency appointment to- day because I was convinced something had gone very wrong.  The flickering is awful isn't it, it feels like I am just about to go into the most awful migraine.  Also my eye was very uncomfortable and painful.  I had convinced myself that the implant was not in properly!  Oh the imagination is a terrible thing!  But after being checked every which way, the implant and eye are perfect.  I was clamped in a very severe manner for the op, due to deep set eyes (oh my, did it hurt!) and this has caused very bad swelling and bruising, with burst blood vessels which is causing all the problems.  So it is a question of time, but luckily I can now use my allergen drops and gels (thank god!) as my eye has dried out completely which is making everything very uncomfortable.  I have been assured the sight will come and be fine, so I must have a little faith. (not easy!)

If you gently wipe your eyes with pads soaked in gentle eye makeup remover you will not have to press on your eyelids, just be very very gentle.

So don't worry it will all come good in time.

      Love

Thank you to everyone who replied to my question.  When I left the hospital last Friday they gave me the tel number of the Nurses Station which I was to call if I had any problems.  I called them about using artificial tears and the first person I spoke to didn't know so they asked someone else and the answer was yes but don't put them in at the same time as the other drops (!). I used them yesterday but did not feel much different.  My eyes were worse yesterday but today they feel better - so far!

Jacqueline, I hope you got on OK at the eye clinic.

Maye, you were given a long list of things not to do.  I left the hospital with 2 bottles of drops and told to put them in my eye twice daily and nothing else - no instructions about what else to do or not to do. I also felt that I could see the black rim of something at the left corner of my eye but it has diminished a bit.

Yeah, and i plan to stick with it til a month. Just to make sure i dont mess up my eyes 😬

      Hi Fandango

Oh we are running on a similar par, I got the black rim in the left corner of my eye too, but it has not happened to day.

I got an emergency appointment this morning and have been checked every which way, and all is fine.  My problems are caused by the extreme clamping because of my deep set eyes.  There is inflammation, broken blood vessels and swelling so it is question of waiting until all this settles down.  Still at least it has stopped me panicking thank goodness.  The good thing is I can now use my allergen drops and gels, the poor eye had completely dried out so this is why it was so uncomfortable.

Don't laugh, I was so washed out when I got home, I just went to bed and slept for hours, what a lazy bed bug I am!

I was given a few things not to do, like heavy lifting and no exercising only walking but I was allowed to shower and bend down etc.  It seems every Surgeon has a different way of dealing with things.

So glad your eyes are feeling a bit better today, fingers crossed.  Let me know how you get on.

      Love

Hi Fandango...I would not use them with out ringing your contact at the hospital first. If you are already using 2 lots of drops they gave you after op another one may react with the others. One of the drops they gave me was to keep eye lubricated. Don't risk anything. It does not hurt to ask. Your eyes are precious.
