Sertraline - Advice on what I should do

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hello.

I suffer with Anxiety/Depression - I've recently been put on 50mg Sertraline (48 hours ago). - I previously took Flouxtine (Prozac) but that didn't work out well.

Within the first 24hours I received a lot of common side effects, which I know is expected so I kept on going best I could.

Now this thing happens. I must note with my depression, I'm lucky enough not to get suicidal thoughts, although I really don't care if I die. - Now my mouth was dry (Common side effect), so I went downstairs got a drink, I was walking back upstairs and my mouth was really watery (It was uncomfortable), so I thought to rinse my mouth out in the bathroom.

My thinking pattern was normal, just what I was doing.. Then I walked in to the bathroom but the next thing, some b.s. thing came in to my head saying "I should slit my wrists" -- It can randomly, I'm not even calling it a suicidal thought. I'm calling it a voice. I've been freaking out since it happened about an hour ago.

I dont know if it's to do with the meds, or if it's me over thinking somehow causing that thought process. but I don't know what to do.

Any advice?

    Hi Mattix

We note from a recent post which you have made to our forum that you may be experiencing thoughts around self-harm. If we have misinterpreted your comments then we apologise for contacting you directly. But if you are having such thoughts then please note that you are not alone in this, and there are people out there that can help.

If you are having these suicidal thoughts then we strongly recommend you speak to someone who may be able to help. The Samaritans offer a safe space where you can talk openly about what you are going through. They can help you explore your options, understand your problems better, or just be there to listen.

Their contact details are on our patient information leaflet here: https://patient.info/health/dealing-with-suicidal-thoughts, which also offers lots of other advice on how you can access the help you may need.

If you are having such thoughts then please do reach out to the team at the Samaritans (or the other people detailed in our leaflet) who will understand what you're going through and will be able to help.

    Kindest regards

    Patient

If you get this type of thought, lie down and listen to a meditation/relaxation tape which helps you breathe and focus your mind on your breathing. I do think Sertraline can alter our mind/thinking and I have had many negative thoughts while on this med.

you need to relax and calm your mind. Talk to your doctor about this also. Good luck.

Thank you for your response. Currently in the process of contacting the doctor.

I think I got extremely freaked out last night because I don't normally suffer with those thoughts and it was like a voice popped in to my head saying to do that.

I will do as you said, if it happens again though.

Hey - I'm still waiting to speak to the doctor. They aren't always the best at responses, which is annoying - specially at a time like this.

Don't put off taking it because of negative comments about it, it works differently for everyone. I do know a lot of people that take it and they're all with happy days because of it. But good luck to you too! smile

I’ve just came off of duloxetine and had the side effects your going through so stopped 😬 still on low dose of mirtazapine which you get no side effects with except weight gain. Setraline is my last option but really hesitant x
