Sertraline and pregnancy

Hi iv been on sertraline for just under a year this medication has saved my life I’m in such a better place mentally. Without it I am argumentative paranoid, anxious and the rest the biggest with me though is OCD. I have just recently found out I’m pregnant and haven’t taken this medication for 4 days since I found out. Doctor has advised not to take and there’s no safe alternative, as can be possibility of heart defects in baby due to sertraline. I just want the best for the baby but that also comes with a healthy body for baby to grow in and I’m so scared that without sertraline I’m going to deteriorate. Any advice of anyone would be appreciated????

    Hi Marry,

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

My postpartum depression started straight after I have given birth to my son 13 months ago .

I have been taking sertraline 11 months now and I am breastfeeding.

The doctor prescribed this medicine because is the safest one , and also informed me not to get scared if I fall pregnant again while I m on sertraline cause it’s safe .

Talk with the midwifes and the doctors again.

Hopefully you won’t have to stop it .

Even if you stop it during the pregnancy, be sure that you can start it straight after you give birth smile

Keep me updated! Best of luck 😀

    Hi Mary,

I was really shocked to read this - so much so I told my partner and am replying!

I was on Citalopram for years but when I fell pregnant last year it was recommended that I switch over to Sertraline as it is the best one to be on during pregnancy. I was very apprehensive as I take a large dose and was afraid of what side effects I may have but the Dr managed it really well having listened to what I was worried about and making it a gradual transition.

I know that they say nothing is 100% for pregnancy but I knew it was safer for me to be on medication then not especially for such a significant amount of time.

I would agree with Kakia -speak to your midwife (I would do that first thing tomorrow) and maybe see a different doctor to get the prescription or a second opinion.

    Best of luck xx
