Sertraline and ribs/muscle/chest

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have been on Sertraline (100mg) for three days now...yeah, i know, very early days.  The side effects have been horrible.  I have the ususal side effects, such as sickness, dizziness, headache, stiff neck and shoulders, tiredness, weird dreams, no appetite and unable to sleep.

It is the chest that worries me.  I took sertraline three years ago and had a sore  cartilage that joins to the sternum.  The current chest symptoms are the same but the tenderness is in the muscle between the ribs. At first, i thought it was my heart, but the muscles are tender to touch.  When i breth in there is a sharp pain in that area and my chest feels tight.  Also, is a hot flush normal, where my face can go a little flushed?  I feel like i've been hit by a car!

Tanks in advance for any feedback!

Hi Lucy, I'm sorry you've been having such a hard time. My fiancé started taking Sertraline two weeks ago. He's had the first list of side effects you mentioned, but he hasn't had the chest feeling. It's been my understanding that if you do have a side effect that unexpected, you should call your doctor to discuss! It could also be something related to the usual side effects -- for instance, my fiancé has had really sore muscles all over because he's been shaking so often and it tenses everything up and makes them sore. Do you think it could be something to do with that?

Either way, I think you are totally justified in asking your doctor for her/his opinion! It's good to have peace of mind. Good luck!

    Hello Lucy,

side effects are horrible aren't they.

the chest pains are not something I have experienced with the drug, but the hot flushes , yes, still get some now from time to time.

I have been on 50 mg for about 6 months which seems to  be working, I sleep, well and it helps a little with muscle pain, I have really bad migraines every other week for 5 days and fibromyalgia . I was on 100mg first which gave me the symptoms you have . I felt so,bad on them I  just stopped taking them. I didn't realise the side effects that gave me. I couldn't get out of bed without a walking stick. I had muscle pains everything. It seems it take months to get into our system. Go back to,the doctor you may only need 50mg instead of the 100mg good luck

I have been on zoloft for 10 years and it works. I just recently increased my dosage to 100mg almost 2 weeks ago due to depression and health anxiety. The first couple days were bad, but it seems like its getting a little better except hot flashes and no appetite and bad stomach which im hoping will go away. I would say stay on it and give it at least 4 weeks to see how you feel.
