Sertraline and ringing in my head ! Is this common .. Need advice !

Posted , 3 users are following.

I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.... So, my GP put me on sertraline. He advised I take 5 days of 25mg then up the dose to 50mg.  I followed my GP advice and on day 7, which was the second day I took a 50mg sertraline pill...

i got this ringing , constant high pitches tone in my head . Not really my ears ..more so like it’s coming from in my head .

I had an MRI done on my head ...that was perfect , nothing wrong.

i saw an ENT doctor...nothing wrong , no hearing loss.

please help!!

I’m scared and honestly...I’ve never cried so much in my life ..

Should I get off sertraline ? And if so will this ‘constant tone’ disappear in how long roughly ?

or should I bare with sertraline and things get better ?

Is ringing in the head a side effect and will it ever go away ... ??

is this common ?

thanks Joey

    Hi

on starting up on sertraline I had buzzing in my head then ringing in my ears.

yes it’s quiet normal one of the many side effects.

Everythings come back normal on your tests, so try not to worry.

    stick with it,

iyou should start to feel the benefits in a week or 2

keep a diary on how you feel every day then you will see that day by day things  start to get better.

and look through all these posts and hopefully it will put your mind a rest.

    good luck

I would go and google searches on the web about it and all I would read are horror stories of people with ringing permanently.

which of course would make my anxiety higher and the sertraline alone is making my anxiety through the roof.

Your reply is much appreciated... it puts me a lot more at ease.

I really wonder if this is just sertraline or also ALL SSRI’s ? .... the reason I mention that is my GP did mention that he can just switch meds one for another.

He did this two hand fist 🤛 thing ...like insert one drug here and same time pull back the other drug.

personlly, I don’t think it’s that simple.  If in not clear, basically, GP is trying to say replace one drug with another of equal strength and the brain won’t know the difference since they are all SSRI drugs and the ringing might stop .

Bothers me how GP’s are so at ease playing around with our minds. I also asked him about the ringing and he knew nothing about it .

Thankyou for for your reply ..my anxiety is better .

Live been having such a hard time .

Apparently sertraline is the best one given by GPs for anxiety.

iv been on it for 8 months and occasionly I still get ringing in my ears but it only lasts a few seconds then it’s gone.

Am I taking it that you’ve only been on it for a week or so??

If so it’s very early days, and the anxiety does get worse before it gets better.

i didn’t think I was going to settle on sertraline and I phoned the receptionist one morning crying my eyes out thinking I was dying with the side effects. I couldn’t get an appointment until the next week, but by the time I got in things started to settle having a few good day with the bad.

i also still get clenching jaw, which some write about,

Things don’t get to me like they used to, and I bite back instead of going to one side and cry.

stick with it, and don’t keep upping your dose too quickly, give it time to settle into your system and it’s easier to tell which dose suits you.

hope this helps, done be afraid to ask me more questions if you need to.

sometimes it’s a very lonely place to be if you have no one to talk to.
