Sertraline causing depression?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I’ve been on 50mg of sertraline for about 6 weeks for anxiety and panic attacks. While the medication has completely helped with my anxiety, i have been feeling depressed and with suicudal thoughts, which I have never had in the past. Could the medicine be causing this? I enjoy the medications help with the anxiety but I can’t handle the thoughts it’s causing

I went through this !   Yes call your dr . My anxiety and depression were BAD !   Every day I wondered how I was going to make it . Our brains are trying to rewire. The signals are bouncing around like ping pong balls . I went through about 4 weeks where I felt like I was going to die . My brain went into overdrive!   Never stopping !   I sympathize with you !   This is No Fun !   But you are not alone . 6 weeks is very early on this medication!   It has taken me 4 months to get where I am today and it’s still not that great . Keep posting when you feel down . We are here for you !!!

    Hi Kate

Most definately the medication I have a fear of death hence my anxiety disorder and I kept thinking I should strangle myself!! Was horrible and not something I would do but the thoughts were there x

It’s the meds kate, it’s one of the side effects. I had strong thoughts of wanting to hang myself!

I’m still anxious with bad tinnitus but those thoughts have passed now.

It should ease off but call your GP. for advice.

Thank you for your response, it is nice knowing I am not alone. If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take for the thoughts to stop for you and what dosage where you taking?

I’m on 50mg. I started to reduce a little then went back to this strength. I’ve been on them for many years and don’t remember these side effects all that time ago. I restarted probably mid January and although the depression eased I experienced all these frightening impulses!! That took a few weeks, ebbing and flowing but it will pass for you I’m sure. I’m still anxious and trying to manage that with hynotherapy.

It’s like I had a personality transplant! I still can’t believe I’m going through this awful time.

Those thoughts of yours WILL eventually disappear.

Right!! Take a deep breath and try to stop panicking. I have hearing loss and already had some T but it has got worse due to sert I think. Anxiety can also temporarily cause tinnitus and although I don’t have a crystal ball I think this might be the case for you.

Symptoms change, I had severe jaw clenching but this also ebbs and wanes.

A couple of people on this forum have had their T disappear.
