Yes, insomnia is a very common side effect of SSRI's especially sertraline. It is an activating antidepressant and can cause excitability and increase in anxiousness also. Every time I start taking it or increase the dose I go through a couple of weeks on very little sleep. One thing I can recommend is that you take it in the morning, if your not already. Other than that I say hold on and it should start to go away once your body gets used to it. Good luck...

Ditto here on the insomnia on sertraline. I am now 4 1/2 weeks in and it's slowly getting better. A night without sleep is a very discouraging thing for sure.

I have seriously started practicing mediation recently. I find that when I am in the "zone," this is an incredibly powerful relaxing feeling. Done right before bedtime, it can put you easily into a very sleepy mode. It's hard to describe but truly feels like a chemical reaction in your brain.

I am naturally suspicious of sleeping medication as it can put you in a loop that might make the problem worse (as in you becoming unable to fall asleep without it), and as it has the potential to throw off your natural sleep cycle.

Many years ago, I took Ambien for five days to break a cycle of insomnia. At the time, it worked, but the sleep I got from it was never good.
