Sertraline dose increase

Hi all,

I have been on sertraline for just over 2 weeks (the first 2 at 50mg and now 3 days on 100mg). I was noticing some positive changes, albeit small ones, towards the end of the initial 2 weeks, but the intrusive thoughts and rumination were still present so the psych and I decided to increase the dose to 100mg where I'm at now.

Since increasing I have noticed that I feel more anxious and jittery, I think this happened when starting at 50mg too. Does anyone know if this is expected with a dose increase and how long it may last?

Thank you -

M

Hi, how are you feeling now? I hope you feel better. I am currently in the stage of upping my dosage too. I have been on sertraline for 5and a half years with huge success i had horrible start up effects but after they went i was completely myself again. I stayed on them due to having too many up and downs since having my first children 13 years ago. I was doing great, then some horrendous things happened at home and my anxiety and intrusive thoughts cane back! I upped my dosage to 75mg and experienced all the start up effects again and felt horrible. After 4 weeks ish i wasnt feeling great still so upped again to 100mg first 5 days i felt alot better still not 100% but better than i have been for weeks. Then last night and today i feel awful again, i really hope im not getting all tge start up effects over again. I feel hopeless at times and just want me back again.

Hi ...each increase will increase side effects again, a bit like starting again for between 1 and 3 weeks depending on chemistry!

    Hey Maria,

It's going to depend on the individual as to how you're going to react. From my experience, you're still at an early stage of the conditioning process. When I first started taking Sertraline, it took me around 6 weeks to normalize. Increasing a dose can bring on some side effects, but again it's going to depend on how long you've been taking a particular dose before the upping of it, and how your body reacts to it.

If you're just getting jitters and extra anxiety, that's not bad at all. I had some god awful side effects when I first started, which you could list down your forearm 😃

The unfortunate truth, is that these kinds of meds will react differently in everyone. Some get no side effects at all. I'd see how the 100mg goes for another 2-3 weeks, and if you feel like something could be improved on, you could try 125mg, but check with your Psych first.

I know it sucks and it feels awful, but try to remember that it's your brain chemistry trying to settle down. These are powerful medications.
