hi, 1 - 3 months depending on the individual, with increase usually at 2 - 4 weeks at 50mg a time, max 200mg . 100mg is classed as the placebo level for many .

some struggle with 50mg others need more, it's a catch 22 situation and only you can get to the level of mg you need. what you have to remember is when you have a blip or suffer side effects many think the meds are not working, however it is often this what makes some change meds or reduce does, however it takes time so anyone who thinks around 2 weeks you should feel better it may not happen and shouldn't not for at least 4 weeks. below are some symptoms i personal had

    first week

headaches not too painfull but managable

nausea i hated that part aweful

    weight loss plenty for me

    how sweats special at night

    vivid dreams

pain in elbow and some back pain

hard to swollow which makes you caugh a lot trying to clear

    slight acid burn in throat

    finger pain

    panic attacks

    doom and gloom

    allways thinking the worst

    very poor sleep

stayed like this for around 4-6 weeks

started to take tesco sleeping pills worked amazingly

symtoms started to subside so went to 100mg and dr gave me 40mg propranolol to go with the sertraline and to  help me .

this started in around april 2015

today all symptoms gone apart from the odd day when my nausea and head aches come back but they are not often anymore, can't express how i feel today compared with how i felt at the start. so yes it's a challenge and you will find it hard but it is worth it, have faith in the medicine and it will work for you.take care

For me 3 weeks and then 4 1/2 to feel normal again.

How long have u been on them?

    Hi Patricia

it can take anything between 6-8 weeks for Serline to work.

i was ok no real side effects....been on them for 6 months now.....

BUT that is BUT.....was lucky enough for 5 months to of always had the same colour and brand......BUT the I was given a different brand and different colour BlUE NOT WHITE!!!!!.

i didn't take at all good to this brand and come half way through my second pack I thought bugger this.....I was getting Diorria, headaches very restless.the list is endless having Diariah continually on this drug is not good..I had Obviosly had a real bad reaction to this brand... I did an emergency call into my doctors and was told to see the Pharmacest at the chemist which I did and glad I did...

was told that having dioriah (sorry not spelling this word right)... For the amount of time...I was having a reaction to the brand....

all in all if and when you find the right brand that suits you Sertline really helps just Unfortunate for me this time different brand and diff color didn't agree with me!!!!!...

what colour r u on and brand?

    all the best Michelle.

Hi I am on Lustral because 3 years ago when on the same drug every time I put in a prescription and got a different brand and my stomach was just awful.  In the end the doctor agreed to putting Lustral on my prescription (still have troubele getting it).

I really wish these side effects would go.  Best wishes on your journey.

Hi the trouble is though it's what get sent to the chemists, at the cheapest brands.......

i was told this when I quired this last week at the chemist

pharmestest reply was: we don't know what we'll get in, we get sent the cheapest brand names in!!!!!! Even though I wanted to stick to what I have always had...l.NOT a guarantee!!!!.

only alternative is to check what they give you at the chemist and if and only IF they have somthing in that you wanted (eg Brand/ colour) they'll swap!!!!.

My notes have been put on their computer system BUT......BUT ( only if they can get the brand in!!!!) sooooooo it's a vicious circle!!!!!!?

Im currently NOT taking this pack gone 2days with no Sertline Carnt hack all the horrid symptoms I'm / was getting!

hopfully back on them today IF I get any joy from the chemist when I call in to get my perscription ?????!!!!!.

      Wish me luck?!.

It is so frustrating, dealing with the anxiety is bad enough without anything else.  You will get there (says me not knowing if I will).  I am really trying to be positive but it is difficult when you just want your life back.

Sending you a big hug x.

Ewwww, this all sounds scary. After a year on fluoxitine 60mg, all over the place. I started 50mg (blue) on Tuesday. I've been told by other phsycs I'm bi-polar and my friends and family agree. I just feel out of control, my emotions are controling me and I panic. Not sure how I feel right now, bit sicky thats it. I need some control and I'm badly up and down. Hope this works for everyone but I'm having doubts x

Hello Patricia, I had really bad side effects for the first 3 weeks of taking 50mg of Sertraline, by 4 weeks I was feeling better but was still having jitters but nowhere near as they were in the beginning, by week 5 I felt so much better.  Between Christmas and New year (8 weeks in to the medication)  I had a dental appointment for a root canal and started to get palpitations the day before but once the root canal was done the palpitations decreased.  On New Years day we had 14 of us here for a buffett and I woke very anxious, dry heaving as if I was going to be sick but not actually being sick, diahorrea and very shaky.  I know I was worried about the day but it went well and today I feel much better, no side effects, slept well last night so much better.  I know over Christmas I didn't drink enough water to be honest I got out of the habit, so for the last couple of days I've drunk about 2 litres of water each day, don't know if it's coincidence but I do feel better.  I think you have to help the Sertraline by trying to keep busy, drink lots of water, get out and about and try to think positive, the Sertraline can't do it all for you I think they just help you once the side effects wear off.  I had follow up appointment with the dr on 22nd Dec and he was happy for me to stay on 50mg and was pleased with my positive thinking and said that goes a long way to helping you.  Stick with it, think positive (I know that's not as easy as it sounds), try to live as normal a life as possible but do be kind to yourself and rest if and when you can, it will get better but you need to believe it.  This forum has really helped me and I feel I've made some really good friends and we've helped each other through with positive comments and support. Hope you feel better soon. x

I'm not surprised your day is bad when your Mum is in hospital, hope she will be OK, do you have family to support you?  The clouds will lift, in the early days when I first posted on here I really couldn't ever imagine feeling better but I do now.  You will get there, message me if you want a chat and be kind to yourself xx

Hi Linda, you said that you are better now. I'm so glad when I hear people post this, it gives me hope. Can I please ask what did you suffer with the most? What needs and therapy did you have? And how long until you felt your self again?

Sorry ft or all the questions, hope you don't mind xx

I don't mind at all lattifa7777, at first I suffered with anxiety after a health scare with my husband, he is much better now but the anxiety continued even after we knew it wasn't life threatening.  I read a book that helped me a lot and my anxiety improved greatly but I was left feeling a bit flat which is why I went to the dr and started on the Sertraline. My anxiety returned I think as side effects of the medication but really by about weeks 4/5 was so much better, probably not completely 100% but getting there.  Had a blip between Christmas and New Year as I had a root canal appointment at dentist and I did get palpitations the day before but once the treatment was done I was back to feeling well again.  On New Years Day we had a buffet for 14 people and I got very jittery again but the day was a success and the jitters were gone by that evening.  Feeling tired but I think Christmas/New Year can be stressful and tiring.  I was feeling at week 3 that I needed to up the Sertraline from 50mg but when I spoke to dr he said to wait until at least 5 weeks, I'm glad I waiting because by then I didn't feel I needed to up the dose so stayed at 50mg and coping well on the whole, I'm now 8 weeks into the meds.  Stay positive (I know that is easier said than done sometimes) and try to rest when you can.  My sleep was bad at first but now is much better too and I think a good night's sleep helps the recovery.  I try to be careful not too get too overtired and I drink at least 2 litres of water each day as my dr told me to stay well hydrated.   Hope this helps you, it does get better xx

Thanks solo much I'm Aldo at 8 weeks, I was doing really well at 4 1/2 weeks, like O felt almost 100% my self, but took a bad dip on X'mas day, had a panovk attack, and went off my food for a few days, I'm a lot better now, but still haven't returned to how i was before X'mas day: (

Saw my Dr after X'mas, she said she will not up my dose yet, and is putting it down to xmas stress?? I really would like to stay at 50mg and not go up. So I will try and drink the water line you said and get good sleep.

      Thank you.
