Sertraline - too much too soon?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Please help. My husband was prescribed 50mg of Sertraline in January for anxiety. His GP reviewed this and increased the dosage to 200mg after 2 weeks. he has been taking this for 8 weeks during which time he has felt very ill - severe and constant diarrhoea, feeling weak and tired. I question how quickly the dosage was increased - reading other comments it doesn't seem correct. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi, that's a very large increase of Sertraline after only 2 weeks, my own personal experience is that I feel side effects every time it's increased, even by 25mg at a time, but that is me, we are all different. Please call his GP and ask if they feel the dosage was increased too quickly, mention that you are concerned about serotonin toxicity and they will advice you with the best course of action to take. Does he have anything else to take the edge off, e.g. Diazapam?

I hope that he feels better soon...

Thank you for your advice. We have called the surgery - they are very reluctant to talk about it but have reduced his dosage down to 150mg. He is still not feeling well but we are hoping it gets better in the next week or 2.

Please keep him reassured that it WILL get better, and that some people take longer to adjust to certain medication than others.

It's important for him to be kind to himself during these low times... what I find helps is writing how I'm feeling in a personal journal.

      all the best...
