Hi
I am new to Sertraline but have been suffering from depression for about three years on and off but my doctor has told me that I may have been suffering on and off with it for longer. I am planning to go to a councillor but just waiting for an appointment. I wanted to hear from and reply to other people who are in the same boat type of thing as I am having problems trying to find people who understand how I feel and would like to hear from others.
My partner understands a little but i guess its harder for someone who does not feel that same at times.
Your help would be appreciated.

I felt just like you as I am new to Sertraline as well and this is the first time I have taken any anti-depressant medication as well. I have been taking Sertraline for about 8 weeks now and like you I was really worried about the possible side effects. I was worried about possible side effects (who isn't!), but decided that I had to give it a go at least. I did have some nausea initially but that has passed now, and I must say that the benefits far outweigh any minor side effects, because your new sense of wellbeing tends to exert itself gradually. Don't expect instant miracles - it took about 3 weeks for me to notice any real difference, but my optimistic state of mind, trusting that they would work, helped me through the first uncertain days. I am now finding that I can cope with everyday situations much better and my husband is constantly commenting on the change in me, so that is a good sign!
Good luck and I hope this has helped a little. Let us know how you get on.

I have been on Sertraline on and off for a few years now and I have to say they work well for me. I have been taking them for depression. Mostly the depression is mild and at its worst moderate. I'd feel low, tearful etc and sometimes it would affect my eating and sleeping. When I take it every day (I often forget to take it when I am feeling ok believe it or not!) I feel good. I am a very shy, insecure person but taking this medication seems to improve my happiness and confidence a great deal. The only side affects I ever really got was a bit of nausea and tiredness when I first started taking it. And yes it does take a few weeks before it really starts to kick in. I prefer medication to counselling although I know it is not a long term fix.
Hope they work well for you and that you feel better soon

Ive had depression 4 times in my life and have taken sertraline on two occaisions. Im am on 100mg of sertraline as 50mg didnt touch the sides really.
During the last episode of sertraline I found that it worked perfectly and to a point too well. I ended up clearing all the hurt out my life and resigned form my terrible job but now Im glad I did.
This time Ive been on it for 5 weeks and although my mood had improved I still fee low. I found out that that any small amout of alchohol has contributed to this. Under no circumstances must you induce alchohol whilst taking the drug. Since ive abstained I feel better.
You will have side affects, mine was shaking of the legs and bad diarrhoea
but that has now stopped, and my appetite has returned.
Stick with it and youll be fine.
