Sertraline - weight gain and no sex drive getting me down

Posted , 5 users are following.

I'm 38, been on antidepressants n and off for about 3 years. Been on Sertraline for 6 months, and the side effects are starting to really grind me down. My sex-drive is non-existent, which is also getting my husband down even though he tries to understand. My weight has also increased, despite doing endless exercise and being on a high-protein diet (monitored by my personal trainer). Just seems counter-productive, my depression is much more under control, if I dont think about the effects!!!

Are there any alternative medications? Pleased help

These are side effects known to ALL antidepressants and psych meds. They were never meant for long term use. As you are on them even longer the side effects can include Tardive Dyskonisia, fecal incontenence, and many more.

They are having great success with essential oils such as doTERRA. They have no side effects that I'm aware of and you can mix oils you need specifically for your individual symptoms. If you'd like to know more please feel free to e-mail me.

There are aroma therapies specifically related to mood enhancement. That is something you can easily try at home and see if you feel better. There are other therapies that work on mood you can research on the web. I would take some time to do that. Pushing through sexual side effects is brutal and sometimes impossible. The good news it that once you are off these meds your sexual performance/enjoyment will return within a few weeks or so.

    Good luck in your search...

I also have experienced the same side effects.  Now with knee pain issues I have reduced from 100mg to 50 mgs.

I would like to hear what the alternatives are. I'm told I can try something new, but I'm afraid to stop and start new again.   I have been on this med for anxiety so going off is questionable, since I was told I'd be on it most likely for life.

      Hi Kezmac

I suffer with anxiety and have been on / off anti depressants a few years and tbh I think they help to a certain extent and obviously everyone has different symptoms for going on them

There are strategies naturally you can take in life to help like getting out in the fresh air , exercise , being around positive people, talking about issues, and having a structured routine.

I've decided to come off them altogether because I want to feel things again!

I swear they do numb part of me.

      Keep smiling ☺️

    Hit a low today

Drinking a few beers trying to figure out what I'm happier with - 100mg sertraline with weight gain and no sex life, or none with the s**t that follows...

Please, you need someone to talk to. A friend, a clergy, family, someone.

This quandary is SO hard to determine on your own. Your mind insists that you are in a catch-22. But in reality you are not. Talk therapy will help you work through the seemingly hopeless position you face.

Sex is a basic human need. It is our right as children of God. Its bonding qualities are imparative to our relation with our spouse. There are some meds, ie., Cealis, etc. that can give you hope for a fulfilling sexual relationship.

You may be able to find alternative ways to treating your mood issues without relying on meds. Please don't give up looking for ways to be happy and satisfied with your life.

BTW, alcohol may sound like the answer. Sometimes maybe the ONLY answer. In truth, it will make things harder to workout. Be good to yourself. Think of ANYTHING you can do to treat yourself to life. It may be a mind diversionary tactic now but in the end, it will buy you some time...

You will be in my prayers...

Hi kezmac, I have been using Sertraline for 4 years and the decline of my sex drive was a problem for me and my wife. I am lucky having a sister who is. Gp and has trained also in alternative medicine, and she suggested me to take gingseng compositum from the German company Heel. It has worked. This version of the Chinese medicine is based on priciples similar to those of homeopathy, so it is safe to take. It comes in drops. You can get it on the internet or in alternative pharmacies. I do not know if the common ginseng you get everywhere works as much as the Heel version.

Yes, i do. 10 drops three times a day. It took 1-2 weeks to work, and have been taking them for 3-4 years now. I am 48.
