Sertraline - will this be any better than the others?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi - I've not been well for a while and at xmas saw my GP who prescribed citalopram which made me worse, he switched it to fluoxitine which didn't help either so switched to venlafaxine which wasn't great either.

So he discontinued everything & referred me to mental health service. Just seen the occupational therapist today who has spoken to consultant who has said I should try Sertraline.

I've been on none of them for longer than 6 weeks so none have been given chance to get past side effects, which in my case were increased suicidality, crying etc.

will this one be any different?

if your not going to try any longer than s1x weeks forget it.what makes you worse makes you better , isnt that what they say ,,sertraline took 12 weeks to start to work on me , as do most ad,s.if your not willing to go the distance dont start .all your doing is a load of side effects for no gain

    hiya jan

hmmmmmmmmm, you mention a consultant, do you mean a psychiatrist jan  do you have a history of psychiatric illness ?? if so, is this the first time you have seen a psychiatrist ?? the six weeks on anti depressants is by no means long enough, the only reason to try another med after only 6 weeks is if the side effects are really bad :? if you are seeing a psychiatrist he will have read your notes and knows a damn sight more than a GP does when it comes to psychiatric illness, he will decide which is the best med for you jan, NOT the GP

I was referred to the service by my GP but I haven't seen anybody other than an Occupational Therapist who came to see me at home. The OT had a 'case meeting' with the Consultant (consultant in what I don't know) in the mental health service and the outcome was that they refer me back to the GP to get another prescription - I'm not happy about this situation but I don't know what to do about it.

I acted on advice of GP in reference to stopping the other drugs, I know they take a while to kick in (I'm not stupid, just depressed). Side effects were bad for me, but maybe not to others, as I became obsessed with suicide and couldn't function in looking after my son.

This is my third recognised episode of depression in 12 years, last time I wasn't happy with GP as his solution was to tell me drugs don't work and councelling wasn't available on NHS so I walked away from them to let it run it's course, after a while I saw a councellor privately and it helped to some extent

    Hi Jan,

I have tried Citalopram, Lofepramine & Mirtazapine and like you had dreadful side effects and had to come off them quite quickly. I have now been on Sertraline for 6 days and touch wood so far the side effects aren't too bad which is great. Some stomach pain, a bit of nausea and appetite loss but after my weight gain on Mirtazapine that's a welcome relief. My fingers are crossed that this one is going to give me some relief from my depression. How are you feeling now Jan? Have you stayed on the Sertraline?
