sertraline with therapy

Hi

I started on Sertraline 18 days ago. I've even improving slowly, but I've just had a letter from my psychology assessment to say that I scored 8/27 for depression and 13/21 for anxiety. Just wondering what other peoples scores are as I'm really worrying about mine. The letter has made me really anxious!

    Hi Coop

What is it that you are worried about specifically? Is it because you think the scores are high? And are you on Sertraline for depression, anxiety or a combination of both?

I've been on 100mg for almost 5 months for anxiety. My depression scores are very low, but my anxiety scores aren't exactly high either. It's the overall picture really, so through talking to my doctor (and a counsellor) it is clear that I need to remain on it for a while yet, despite the scores not being sky high.

I don't think your scores are that high or anything to become more anxious about (easier said than done, I know), and at least you are getting some help in dealing with how you're feeling - so you're definitely going in the right direction! I hope it continues to help you.

      Hi Bellaseb

Thanks for replying. I guess I am just worried about the scores being high. I was put on medication for feelings of anxiety and panic attacks. I don't feel like I am depressed at all, so seeing the score of 8 just panicked me as I don't really know what it means. I think today has been a bad day anyway as I've been quiet at work and my family are on holiday, so I've had plenty of time to worry. I usually find that carrying on as normal - seeing friends and family really helps me. I have group therapy at the end of the month, so hopefully that will help. I'll just keep on keeping on! P.S I am new to feeling anxious - never had anything like this before and it's horrible!

      Hi Coop

Please don't worry about your scores - they are a lot lower than mine have been in the past (on both anxiety and depression) and I have found the meds beneficial. The fact that you are coupling this with therapy is such a good thing and shows that you are taking the attempt at getting better really seriously.

Anxiety really is one of the worst things ever, because the symptoms are physical as well as mental, and often you can get yourself into a state purely for feeling anxious in the first place. A bit like a vicious circle.

I'm glad you have family and friends to help you through it - if you have understanding and supportive people around you, that makes all the difference.

I don't know what those scores mean.....but may I ask you why you have started on Sertraline?

I started on it because I had a panic attack out of the blue. Since then I have been generally very anxious and have spent a great deal of time worrying and overthinking about the smallest of things.  The tablets have helped me, and I've seen an improvement overall but today feels like I've taken a big step backwards. Luckily this whole anxiety thing doesn't affect my sleep at all, so I should hopefully feel ok tomorrow after a good nights rest.

I am sorry that you are having a hard time of it, Dear Coop, and I hope the Sertraline will help you.....You must have some stress in your life to suddenly develop panic attacks...Many times and most of the time, through my experience anyway....I never took medication for anything I went through in my life....I faced adversity..and found out that what we are going through at the time...Passes...it always passes...and If I know what I know today going through these horrible side effects of going off this stuff......I would never have taken it....I am 11 months of it...and still have horrible side effects......So if you are going to go on an Antidepressant, try not to stay on it too long...because the longer you stay on it and you try to get off it...you will have side effects...and when you do go off it...it must be very, very slowly.....I am only talking through experience and with a group I belong to on facebook....we are all going through the same thing....

      Good luck

      Lee

      Thanks Lee

I just don't think I've had much stress recently. I strongly believe that it's out of the blue. I've had stressful situations in the past and I didn't ever become anxious or have panic attacks because of it. It really feels unexpected and unwelcome!

Some people do have horrible experiences on Sertraline, but others really see the benefit. People work differently, therefore different things will suit different people. Glad you've found a herbal solution, gawen4321... Sadly that has never worked for me.

Hi, I have just started taking sertraline 5 days ago  and not feeling any benifits yet. I started having panic attacks a while ago and tried to control them myself but they were taking over so I eventually went to the docs . I know it won't work straight away but hopefully it will kick in and help me feel a bit calmer , i'v just joined this forum and it's always good to share these things with people who understand . I hope you are okay coop .

Sara it takes 4 to 8 weeks for the sertraline to kick in......You may have some side effects during this time....but they will go away.....Love Lee
