Hi All

My last bloods showed Urea at 12.5ml per litre

My egfr is 31

I know the upper limit of ref range is 7.1

Tryong to compute in my mind how bad my result actually is!

If anyone can share their own results or knowledge to give me some idea that would be great

Also what is the treatment?

Many thanks

Terru

    Terry,

Your BUN level is above normal as you say.  However this can be caused by so many things (too high a protein intake, heart problems, dehydrations, etc.).  However your EGFR level puts you at stage 3b CKD, very close to stage 4.  This should be your area of concern.  You did not relate your age nor Creatinine level.  These are more important figures than the BUN.  But all that said, you need to discover WHY your numbers are in this range.  Are you seeing a kidney specialist?  What does your primary care doctor (who I assume reported these numbers to you) say to you?  They certainly did not just report the numbers and just send you home?  All we can do is speculate on what you want to know about treatment?  Because who knows why your kidney (or kidneys) are not doing their job properly.  Without knowing the cause the treatment widely varies.  For example, is just one kidney bad or both?  Is their cancer or immune deficiency or a simple blockage or benign tumor.  With the numbers you reported you certainly need additional testing, to see a kidney doctor or urologist, scans or ultrasounds.  What you are asking is totally legitimate.  But this first needs to be asked of your medical team.  For example, say I had a severe headache.  And I asked what is the treatment.  Yet no one has done anything to find out why I have the headache.  It could be just a common headache, it could be a tumor either benign or malignant, it could be a migraine, etc.  IF you have CKD due to renal failure then treatments are to control blood pressure, cholesterol, eat a CKD friendly diet, etc.  Frequent testing.  Constant consultation with your medical team.  Let us know what the doctors say.

I fully agree with Terry. Have you got protein showing up in your urine analysis? And agree with Terry, as creating and albumin levels are very important in order to give accurate advice. But, I would definitely ask your GP for a referral to a Nephrologist!

    Terry,

I would just echo Rick's response to you. Some questions I'd be asking my nephrologists gist:

    1. Can you help me understand my most recent lab results?  What is your clinical interpretation of my most recent labs? Are you concerned about anything in them? Why or why not?

    2. How do my most recent labs compare with my previous labs?

    3. What, if anything, can I do to improve my labs?

    4. Does my treatment plan need to be modified? Why or why not? If so, how?

Basically, I arrive for my appointment with a set of 3-5 questions that help me better understand what is going on with my renal function specifically; what my treatment goals are; and what, specifically, my nephrologist needs me to do to provide the greatest support possible for my renal function.
