setraline not helping when I have my period

Posted , 3 users are following.

Been on sertraline for about 12 weeks and been on 150mg for 7 weeks. The week before my period I have anxiety and about 9 days into my cycle I get really depressed and it lasts for about 12 days. I don't feel my tablets are helping at all during this time. I've just been put on birth control to see if that would help, but I've read about so many people having success with sertraline. Just don't know why they're not helping. When I do feel more normal, I still don't feel 100% like my old self. Can anyone relate to this or offer some input? Thankyou

Maybe it's like that for some people. I'm considering coming off it and trying something else. But it's scary thinking how I was before I was on these. Thinking of trying prozac.

If your better than before why are you considering coming off them ?

Because every month I'm getting severe depression after my period and my ocd gets worse. Think I probably have an underlying condition which is causing this. I think it's hormones. I don't get to see my doctor until the 23rd. I'm scared nothing will help and I will have a rubbish Christmas because of it. Also I'm becoming so obsessed with looking for answers online. Just doing my head in

So sorry to hear of your on going issues around your period. I am a huge beliver in your hormones playing a huge part in your mood. I used to have dreadful PMT, postnatal depression after one of my children and got the mirena coil inserted 12 years ago for heavy bleeding. Never looked back. Leaving it in place as I go through menopause. I only started feeling anxiety and depression aged 51, average time for menopause and yet docs won't agree connection.

However I am happy on Sertraline as works for me.

How long have you been on the pill? Has it helped? It can give depression for a lot of people. Stress to your doc when you see them the hormone connection. Ask about Mirena coil or do your own research. It is approved treatment for PMT. Best of luck.

Hello Carolyn. I'm totally convinced that it's hormones causing this. I'm currently waiting for a doctor to phone me back. I'm going to ask for blood tests. I've been on loestrin 20 for 6 days now but I've not taken it this morning because I don't know if it's helping or hindering. I have a long term condition, ocd, on top of this and my constant obsession of searching the internet and worrying about what's wrong with me is making me depressed. I'm probably fuelling my anxiety and depression by looking things up but I'm desperate to discover the cause behind this. I'm so frustrated that I'm taking sertraline which should be helping, because I've read so much positive stuff on it. I also have pcos. My periods are regular so could a hormone imbalance cause the mental effects and not physical? I would love to be normal again. I was on citalopram for 8 years for my ocd, but that never covered this problem either. It's hard to know what to think and my mind is a mess. There's got to be a solution somewhere?
