Seven weeks after ORIF surgery.

Seven weeks after ORIF surgery. I was told I broke all three bones in my ankle. I have a plate and screws. Seven weeks and I’m walking with the Walker with the boot. My problem is my hip and the back of my legs hurt I think because of the difference in height between the boot and my shoe. I also still swell in my ankle, and Feel I have a lot of muscle building back up to do. I was in the hospital 11 days, and still sleeping in one in an apartment because I can’t get up the stairs. This seems like a long process and it gets you down. Anyone else having trouble like this?

Hi. I broke 3 bones in ankle too but only 4 weeks ago. So not much help to you except to sympathise. Am also in a boot and beginning to weight bear a bit. It was such a stupid thing to do. A moments inattention causes all this aggro but my main fear is not getting back into hiking again properly certainly not for a while and maybe never on uneven ground. Am 70. Thinking of changing my email to frustrated .com! Hope you get more mobile soon and can get upstairs to your own bed. Good luck and keep posting.

I am 2 weeks out from surgery. Just had my stitches out. I start physical therapy next week. My ankle is very stiff and swollen but Doc said it looked good yesterday. Looking for some kind of silver lining. We live on the 3rd floor and my husband has to carry me up and down the stairs. No weight bearing for me for another 76 days. Yes it seems like a very long process.
Thank you for posting and sharing your experience.

Hi sdlaur46576:
I read your post regarding the difference in height and pain you're experiencing while walking with the boot. Have you tried a shoe lift for you foot without the boot? It helps to make them even, from what I've read. You can find it on Amazon. How is the weight bearing going for you?
I am almost 6 weeks post surgery. I had a large bone cyst inside my talus. In order to access the talus to clear out the cyst, they had to break (cut) my tibia at the medial malleolus and remove the bone. Also, they did an autograft using bone/marrow from my iliac crest (hip) to fill in the large hole that the cyst left inside my talus. They also found a bone spur and repaired that, as well. I had a cast for a week and had to transition into a boot because the cast caused some sort of skin reaction and I had a terrible rash all around my knee and inside my cast. The transition to the boot was really difficult as the boot weighs at least 5 lbs and is much heavier than the cast was. I've been struggling the last 5+ weeks with the constant pain with the boot putting pressure on the screws and incision. Plus, I cannot sleep at ALL. I am looking forward to my appointment this Tues, May 18 to see if my bones have healed enough for me to begin partial weight bearing with the boot and crutches.
