Seven weeks since TKR and. still not walking.

I had a TKR on 21st November last. In addition, in order to partially correct a walking disability, the lower leg was rotated by a few degrees relative to the upper leg. Due to the disability the leg has never been able to completely lay "flat" but since the TKR this situation has worsened and I can neither straighten the leg to the extent that I could prior to the operation, nor can I support my weight on the leg and walk. I feel a lot of the problem is that I have lost a great deal of muscle strength in the leg and in an attempt to rectify this I now use a mini, pedal type, exerciser. Occasionally the knee hurts quite a bit using this, so its use is a little intermittent. The knee is not too painful most of the time, only the lower leg and foot are a bit swollen and this is lessening.

Obviously my worry is will I ever walk again and I would appreciate hearing if anyone has had a similar experience to me and what the outcome is likely to be.

Thanks and Regards,

Jim

I also rented a CPM post MUA that I used literally 24/7 (even found the will to sleep in it) for increased flexion. Although it is passive, it gently stretches you mechanically, and you can challenge yourself by setting it to negative extension and maximum (120) flexion. It helped me. The continuous stretching is imperative to regain mobility. Only then can you focus on strengthening, which will ensure you stay upright and moving forward. If only it didn't take an ice age to improve 😉

I think I'm going backwards: After congratulating myself in walking about 100 feet on my Zimmer a couple of days ago, the knee is now so painful after waking only a couple of steps I have to stop. Bring on the ice and elevation! €@$%@£¥!

Now four months on from RTKR and due to pain in knee, I can only walk a few yards indoors using a Zimmer with forearm supports. When I say walk, I can only slide my "good" foot since to raise it off the floor is impossible due to the strain/pain on my "bad" leg. I have not heard of anyone having this trouble with walking. I have no pain sitting or lying. I'm beginning to think something is wrong and I might need a further operation.

Five months after total and, at the risk of appearing boring, I am still not walking properly. The best i can do is drag myself along on the Zimmer a few yards before pain in the knee stops me. 95% of the pain I get is when I put my weight or some of it on the affected leg. If I have a good day, i.e

I have several sessions on the Zimmer, then for the next couple of days i can't walk at all.

Whilst I am not easily depresed, I cannot see an end to this. I am due to have the hip replaced before too long in the hope it will stop, or at least reduce the knee pain but I have difficulty in believing this. The pain I feel is around the knee and under the knee cap (if I still have one!) and I fear an eventual revision. Has any one else been this long without being able to walk?

Hello, Despite the pain that occurs when putting weight on my bad leg very slowly lessening and being totally pain free otherwise, I feel it is time to have words of wisdom with my Surgeon. The problem is that I don't know if I should just carry on hoping it will get better or risk a Revision (if offered.) After getting on for nine months I can walk fairly easily indoors but only using a Walker. Outside it's a wheelchair. I can walk up the house stairs by hauling myself up using the bannisters. Going downstairs is much easier. I just hope I make the right decision.

I think your surgeon should have been involved months ago James. I'm assuming you have seen him since the operation. Was he not concerned about your progress? I think normally they would take xrays and check everything is normal. Anyway I feel for you James and hope you see some improvement soon. I had my op. seven months ago and although I had a slower recovery than some people I am able to walk fairly normal now.

I've seen Surgeon twice since operation. 1st time after 6 weeks, he said wait and see what happens. 2nd time after 4½ months, he sent me to get hips checked - no problem with them. So back to see him again !

Hopefully you will get some answers this time James. He needs to xray your knee and check everything is OK. Best of luck!
