Severe anaemia

I've been feeling unwell for a while (headaches, heartbeat noise in my ears, cold all the time, tired, cramps at night, short of breath, chest pains, low concentration, blurred vision) but had no actual pain and these symptoms would come and go so I ignored all the symptoms. I then got a cold and went to the doctors where I was sent for a blood test, my hemoglobin level was 6.1. I was given 3 bags of blood and kept in hospital a few nights. The doctors said there must be something causing my hemogblobin levels to drop so low so i'm waiting on on-going apppointments. Its been almost 2 weeks since all this happened and after i left I did notice a difference with all my symptoms. But over the last few days i have been very tired and cold again, struggling to concentrate, blurred vision and chest pains. Can my hemoglobin levels of dropped that low already? And has anyone got any advice? I'm desperate, I'm feeling very very down at the moment and have taken a fair bit of time off of uni due to all of this. The annoying thing is there is no pain or obvious symptoms, I just feel very slow and lazy which isn't like me at all. It feels like no specialist wants to help, I'm meant to be seeing a blood specialist wed night but he has already said he doesnt know if  he can help. PLEASE HELP IF ANYONE HAS ANY ADVICE... it feels so silly feeling rubbish already, not even 2 weeks after the blood transfusion. sadneutral

Hi Ellie, have you been put on to any kind of iron supplements? I had a hemaglobin level of 6.4 about 5 weeks ago (no transfusion, my choice) I was put on very high doses of iron, I still feel 'rubbish,' my GP says that it takes 3 months or so for blood levels to get back to normal, my situation differs from yours as I know why my levels dropped so much, it must be worrying not knowing what is causing your anaemia, Go back to the docs and see if you can get an earlier appointment with a specialist. Good luck.

      Hello Phoebe,

Yes i was given iron tablets to take 3 times a day, hoping they will kick in soon. Do you know what has caused your hemoglobin levels to drop that low? It just seems like anemia is hard to get to the bottom of haha.

      Hi Ellie,

Yes I had a very heavy bleed which went on constantly for almost 3 weeks, I am waiting to see a consultant about having a hysterectomy, I have finished having children, I am much older than you unless you are a VERY mature student LOL!  Hope things pick up for you soon.

Hi also just been diagnosed with severe anemia and put on tablets but given ones you only have to take once a day.  A friend says it takes a couple of weeks to start feeling better but then rapid response.  Hope they get to the bottom of yours.  The worst part is not knowing!
