severe arthritis in right ankle

I found this forum useful when I had right knee replacement 3 years ago.  Now I have very bad ankle arthritis and the Dr. said possible ankle replacement, but I want that as last resort. Knee was enough. Any suggestions for pain?  I take 2 800 Motrin a day. Thanks

Hi Suzanne, I have been having back issues including sciatica, arthritis and a herniated disc. For pain I take 2 Aleve one in the morning and one at supper time. In between I take two extra strength Tylenol three times a day. This might help with your knee pain.

Thank you. Has anyone had an ankle replacement, or is this the wrong forum?  I am in constant pain. My knee is fine now but now it’s the ankle😳

It’s a beast Suzanne, isn’t it?  So dibilitating!  I have severe OA in both ankles (apart from hips and knees) - walking is sooooo difficult.😡  I take Cocodamol, but I limit it to 3 per day as they can become addictive.

I can’t consider operations as I am 79 and have been on steroids for 6 years (PMR).  I have  had to learn to live with my pain - not easy - but there are others far worse off .  I can still get about as I have a rollator and a mobility scooter.😀

All the best from Constance.   💐💐💐

Hi Suzanne, sorry to hear you're in such discomfort.  I too have advanced OA in my right ankle, as a result of a bad accident that destroyed all the cartilage.  I've had such a rotten time with painkillers and nasty side effects I've been searching for years for other ways to help. One thing I have found is ginger.  The fresh root, not powdered.  I mince it and mix it with body lotion or hand cream and slather it all over the ankle, then put a sock on and leave it for afew hours, then wash off.  It really helps take down the inflammation and swelling, and therefore the pain.  You can also steep the minced ginger in boiling water and drink like a tea (add lemon and sugar to taste if required), that also helps. I have OA in both thumb joints too and before I started using the ginger I couldnt even pick up a cup, pain meds just didnt seem to work.  Now it's just a dull ache and is only really painful if I over use the hand by gripping something for a long time (recently did some house decorating and painted some woodwork with a brush - that evening my hand hurt badly but was easier the next day after I rubbed ginger into it and left it overnight). Hope you find something to help.

I had both knees replaced & seem to have pain in every joint! I'm 72 & I think I'll just have to manage my pain. I take 1 cocodamol 30/500 & 1 8/500 4 times daily, also apply diclofenic gel to painful areas. I'm never pain free though. I don't want more surgery.
