Severe Atopic Dermatitis

My 10 year old son has been suffering with severe eczema and has been diagnosed with atopic dermatisis. It started last year and since then he is suffering. We have tried many dermatologists and almost every type of lubricants, antihistamines, corticosteriod creams and so on.

During last year from March - May his condition was worst and same happened this year. We are not sure of this phenomena.... May be high pollen count!! Any one can give better opinion pls. So far we are unable to clearly identify what are the major triggers for his eczeme....

Also, we have been seeing dermatologists so far and one of my friend whose son is also experiencing similar problem has advised us to see an Allergy Specialist. Kindly advise if a dermatologist or an allergy specialist is more suitable for my son's treatment. WE did his IgE test which was positive.

A different approach to eczema and other ailments treatment:

I started eliminating gluten from my diet around a year ago. I used to suffer reflux on a daily basis and take lots of anti-reflux medication. After going gluten free with my diet, my reflux along with other symptoms disappeared completely. I have to admit my energy levels improved amazingly, and as a consequence of my diet, I'm eating healthier now and it's all good now.

My 9 year old daughter started suffering severe dermatitis/eczema all over her body and scalp 2 years ago which I have tried to manage with all sorts of medicated creams. Homeopaths, GPs and dermatologists have seen her without reaching any conclusion except prescribing more creams. However, I eventually realized that wasn't taking me anywhere. So I took my frustration to a new GP and asked him to order some blood tests to find out about my gluten intolerance just to confirm that I was gluten intolerant.

Following my visit to this "open-minded" GP, I mentioned to him my suspicion that my daughter may be gluten intolerant or celiac (at this point, I've already read enough paperwork and research from specialist doctors around the world). So he did, because he understood my desperation as a Mum.

In the mean time I put my daughter on a GF diet at the beginning of November 2015. After just 4 days of following the diet strictly, her skin improved dramatically, from severe eczema to a clearer skin. Still long way to go, but it seemed I was on the right track! However, her skin has continued to improve much to my relief and the whole entire family and her skin looks almost clean after 2 months.

Back to the blood tests and they arrived last week and they confirmed she is celiac. What a relief! At least I got an answer to my frustration. Being Celiac means that her life will change forever. No more normal foods loaded with gluten, no lollies, ice creams, biscuits or chocolate amongst others. These days it's easy to find these products in a healthier version, just have a look to the big supermarket chains and you'll find that the healthier food aisle is getting bigger and bigger, including all sort of healthy options for people with food intolerances.

I couldn't let this opportunity pass without recounting my personal experience on this forum. I've read about other parents’ experiences with their kids suffering, especially with skin diseases and after what I've learnt and experienced, I just want to pass the message to those who are going through the same frustrations. Best wishes in your journey.

      HUGS, Ana!!

My DS has CD and eczema. We were told his skin wouldn't clear on a GF diet and I didn't believe it, but sure enough, he's still suffering with his AD/eczema. Sheesh. But, he's still light years ahead of where he was when he was suffering from that AND CD!  Best to you and your DD!

hi I'm Kristin, a 32 yr old healthy female. i have had severe itching and what i would suspect is atopical dermatitis. i have had the condition since i was about 7. over the years its come and gone in severity. I'm wanting to know if there is anyone out there that has been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis but DOES NOT have a rash or scaly patches or redness. i am going crazy every night itching and I've tried cortisone creme, antihistamines, lotions, ice and heat therapy, etc. My dad and aunt also had this when they were younger , but they have grown out of it. i unfortunately have not. I have tests ordered by my doctor, an iEg test and an allergy test. she is reluctant to diagnose me with atopic dermatitis even though i fit all the criteria except for the scaly or rashy skin. any advice or words are welcome. thank you.
