Severe back pain only when lying down

Hi,
I am enquiring about a problem i have been experiencing with my back over the last couple of weeks.
Whenever i lay on my back in bed i get severe pain in the lower right side of my back and i have to take shallow breathes because it hurts too much to take full breathes. Depending on how i lie in bed depends on whereabouts its hurts and how painful it is. For example, if i lay on flat on my back or my left side, my lower left side of my back is extremely painful, if i lay on my right side the pain is not as bad but also moves in the right side of my abdomen and if i lay on my front the pain eases a small amount.
I dont get pain during the day when moving around and my general breathing is not affected, sometimes i do feel a 'twinge' if i yawn or take a deep breathe. I also go to the gym 3 times a week and its doesnt hurt during the workout. It literally only hurts when i lie in bed. It also doesnt hurt to the touch.
I know its not a pulled muscle from the gym as that would hurt constantly, but i feel my doctor would try and fob it off as that.
My current job is office based so i do spend many hours sat down during the day, but i exercise regularly throughout the week.
I have used anti-inflammetries and deep heat sprays and creams, which seem to ease it when i first go to bed but by half way through the night, i move in bed and its as painful as before.
What could be causing this pain?

I'm in a simiar boat. It's been 2 weeks since onset of severe pain eminating from throacic back region follwing sleep, and it goes away after 15 minutes upright. Through research and experimentation, I've concluded that my body position during sleep has to change. 5 years ago, I quit sleeping on my stomach due to shoulder/kneck pain. Recently, I've experienced sleeping on left side results in minor pain, on back is worse and on right side is most severe. I used the pillows on my couch to assess different positional options for sleep. It only takes about 15-30 minutes in a given position to assess onset of pain. For me, the best position was on back, torso and head elevated with knees elevated. I'm going to the store to purchase an adjustable bed. I'll also be replacing every piece of furniture that causes pain. I'm also working on techniques for optimization of posture. I'm not going to guess/search for a medical cause. I'll just adapt my environment and myself. I'll check back in 30 days to report the results of this approach.

I had an adjustment by a Chripratic and it worked, one of the joins on my lower back/hip was out of place. I'm free of pain right now and able to sleep laying flat on the bed again.

No new bed needed. After sleeping on back with the pillows and ideal position for 5 nights, the majority of the problems went away. I can now sleep on back and right side without extra pillows. I also stumbled on the root cause, due to nasty crash on mountain bike last September (ribs on left side were either cracked or bruised). Here's what I'm learning, pain can be about spine/disc damage, it can be about muscle soreness, or it can be about nerves. Causes can range from misalignment to posture injury or genetics...Try different approaches and experiment to develop a strategy for sleep, exercise and care.

This truly "pains" me to share but this group should know: My diagnosis turned out to be a tumor in m pancreas that has been radiating pain to my mid-back.
It's been difficulting accepting how long it took my doctors to diagnose this but I'm focusing now on my chemotherapy. Best wishes to everyone.

Sorry to hear about your tumor. How did they discover the tumor, finally? MRI?
My doctor wants me to have an MRI but with my $10,000 deductible I have to pay the whole thing, and I already have $6,000 rolling in from trying to figure out WHY!? Seems like wasted money, but this excruciating night pain is taking its toll.
Thanks.

Hi i'm Samantha, I am 16 and have pain all through my body when I lay on my back or stomach. I don't really think it helps that im in yoga and I have a really large low back bend. I'd like an answer to this too because everytime I going to the doctor they say I'm fine. I'd like to know how im fine but always in pain.

Hi Stormy,
Your symptoms are the same as mine. What have you found out? I've had this for just over three months.
