Severe bunions with stinging pain all over feet-- what is this?

Posted , 4 users are following.

So confused. Been having worsening foot pain for years, bunions getting worse. Developed stinging, shooting pains in my ankles & tops of feet, one worse than other. Was told it's tendinitis, then tendinosis. Pain now is also on bottoms of feet. Gets bad with any time at all on my feet. New doctor said my ankles are ok, he thinks it's my back! My back seems ok to me. Should I have bunion surgery? Has anyone had so much pain on so much of their feet from bunions?

If one doctor says yes to surgery maybe get a second opinion and compare?

I am due to have bunion & mallet toe surgery in December after finally convincing my GP who originally declined to refer me to an Orthopaedic surgeon of the need to see a specialist. I thought all the foot pain I experience was due to the bunion - burning sensation on balls of feet, throbbing/aching all over, a horrible sensation of electric shock when I walk bare feet & a weak ankle. The surgeon took X-rays & mri scans which have showed in addition to the bunion & mallet toe that I have early osteoarthritis in 3 of my joints, 2 mortons Neuromas, a ruptured ligament & an inflamed tendon! So perhaps if you haven’t had scans already it would be worth pursuing? Best wishes

Wow you have a lot to deal with.  My x-rays didn't show inflammation on my ankles, just arthritis. I've read that MRIs often don't show tendinosis and that most doctors don't understand the difference between tendinitis and  Tendinosis. What really bugs me is this specialist didn't think the pain was attributable to even the bunions, though he said they were bad. MRIs are really expensive and I have rotten insurance.  I don't know what to spend money on.  I appreciate your sharing with me and I sure hope your surgery fixes your foot problems.  Good luck and take good care!

Bunions can cause a lot more problems than people give them credit for. After all it is a foot deformity that can change the way you walk & put extra pressure on other joints, ligaments & tendons. I would be inclined to find another doc & MRI scans may be needed just to see if anything else is going on. My surgeon wants to see what impact the bunion & mallet toe surgery have on the rest of my foot issues as he thinks the other issues are basically side effects of the mechanics of my foot being wrong. So I guess time will tell.  I know, I do have a lot to deal with! When my husband read the consultants report he asked how on earth I was managing to do what I do on a daily basis. I said I’m doing it in pain & discomfort! Don’t leave the bunions too long as I’ve read they can cause arthritis & if arthritis sets in on the big toe joint the surgery can be more extensive with toe fusions required. I hope you’re able to get answers & the right treatment soon. Best wishes

Thank you so much for the suggestions and encouragement. I think I'll look for another doctor but it means a lot of time on my feet!  Good luck with your surgery!
