Hi

I'm a 19 year old male and have just recently been diagnoisedety with severe depression, OCD intrusive thoughts and anxiety and with all of this i get quiet alot of suicidal thoughts...i have been to a CBT theropist however they told me im not ready and not well enough to start the CBT, then i got refeered to a psychiatrist and now has refered me to a counselore and i dont see how thats going to help?

I just feel like im going round in circle going to see all these different doctors and theropist and not getting anywhere, I feel like i am at the bottom of bucket and just cant get out... i really dont think seeing a counselore will help me... does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do next and what to ask my GP to do, as i really feel im not getting anywhere.

Thanks

Ross

Hi Ross, so sorry to hear how you are feeling. Has your Doctor given you any medication i.e. anti depressants to deal with your anxiety and depression.

Yes im currently on mirtazapine, olanzapine and lorazepam.

I get the impression that you have not been on your medication for very long, so if that is the case please give it time to work. The Lorazepam is for your anxiety. May I ask what dose you are on and how often you take it.

i have been on the mitazapine 45mg for about two weeks now, Olanzapine 10mg for two weeks and lorazepam for about a month... havent felt any better being on the meds as of yet.

Are you on any medication at all as if CBT or councelling are to be effective with sever depression etc then you need meds to help you also so you can take in the CBT and councelling and get the most from it.

The main difference is CBT looks at how you process and react to thoughts which may trigger deoression or anxiety and looks at changing them, how you can re phrase those thoughts, eg your taking your driving test and feel anxious you may say oh no I'm feeling anxious, I'm gonna fail because I can't concentrate which keeps it going and will trigger more anxiety, alternatively you could say, I'm feeling anxious, it's ok I'm about to take my driving test so is it any wonder it's normal and totally understandable, I'll tell my instructor I'm anxious he will understand.

Councelling looks into the possible reasons for your depression or anxiety, how you can deal with everyday life differently, discuss options you have when faced with difficult or challenging situations.

Councelling helps you understand your past, the type of person you are and perhaps why so you get an insight into you as a person. If your going through a tough patch in a relationship you can discuss this with the councellor "off load your issue, mduscuss and find solutions you can try"

first things first though you need to be on medication if your severely depressed and anxious as this will feed your OCD. Take control and tell your GP everything especially suicidal thoughts and then be guided by him and the professionals.

keep us posted Ross, we care and are all qualified by experience! Nxx

So Sorry you are not having the best time with the health service Ross.

You are never not ready, I think thats crap.

Counselling wil help you to talk about and deal with better, any problems that are underlying in your life. I think that will be a good thing for you.

If the instrusive thoughts are bothering you, rest assured that approx 80% of all adults have intrusive thoughts, but peeople without anxiety/depression are able to dismiss them rather than observing them and becoming fearful/upset/confused by them.

If you want more information on that id good dr seif, I read his stuff on intrusive thoughts when they scared me.

Alternatively, I also read a book called metacognitive therapy for anxiety and depression - the book really helped me to understand why OCD starts, how you can stop it amongst other things. I got that off Amazon. Try that too.

I know you dont feel in a good place but the fact you are wiling to try couselling, speakin with your doctor and come on here shows how much of a fighter and how strong you really are. Stick at this hun, this is not the breaking of you its the making

Great stuff! You are clearly strong willed and strong minded, you can do this!

If I can offer my opinion again, how you are feeling is a response to something that has effected you so - are you sure you 'should' be feeling any different? Sometimes feelings nudge us to change something in our life, you could look at this as your body telling you that something in your life is out of balance and needs to change..this could create a positive outcome.

If you want counelling quicker, you can always go private?

Maybe start writing down your feelings too, that can be cathartic

      xx

my psychiatrist has told me that my depression and anxiety is all due to my upbringing and the counselor when i see them will identify the direct links to why i am feeling the way i do now.

Please ask your GP about your use of Lorezapam. From personal experience I would not recommend continued and regular use ot if.

Hang in there man. I have all 3 as well. It first got real bad 6 years ago. The first few months were the hardest. Don't give up and don't be discouraged. You have more influence over it than you think. Intrusive thoughts are the worst part to me. Just remember its imagination, it's nothing. The part of the brain that controls emotional responses doesn't differentiate reality from fiction. So when your mind starts racing on imaginary thoughts your body gets worked up thinking your really in danger. Just focus on the fact that your safe. It'll pass. Get a good hobby that occupies your thoughts. In time you can learn to work through the bad times faster.

i guess what I'm getting at. You don't have a lot of control over the doctors or counselors. So keep perusing those resources, but in the mean time you can still focus on working through things and healing. A lot of the healing and understanding comes from within.

Remember to make an effort to socialize and be active.

Thanks for the reply how easy is it to get rid of the intrusive thoughts? ....my intrusive are thinking that somthing bads going to happen so would be good if you have any tips other than just doing socializing and be active as i find these really hard at the moment.

My intrusive thoughts have always been about that too. Sometimes that I was going to hurt someone or something. I think understanding is what helped me the most. It's just a random thought, and you can't always control random throughts right. You have a thought that you accidently hurt someone, you dont want to, but the random thought occurs. You think OMG im a terrible person, who has this thought. Then you get anxiety and then you think what if i go crazy and a vicious cycle of fear begins. This is mostly just your reaction to the thought. Everyone has a random thought like that at times, but the big thing is they don't react to it like we do with our OCD, obsessing about the what ifs and the OMGs triggering anxiety on top. And its scary to talk to other people about that as well, what if it scares them or what if they think im Crazy. The fact is man its just a random thought, it isn't something that is going to happen, and it's not anything you can ever control. You have to control your reaction to it. Brush it off, its nothing, dont dwell on it. You can focus and dwell that you are going to win the lottory, but that doesn't mean it is going to happen.

This is why I believe medication can help in the early stages of anxiety and OCD but in the end, the only true way to get over this is to change how you handle the situation and your reaction. And that will come with time.

Wish i knew how to edit a post. What I meant on the lotto thing is, just because your obsessing something bad is going to happen, doesn't mean it will. It is only a thought.
