Severe groin pain

Hi.. My sister is experiencing severe pain in her left groin area. She is in tears every night and no one seems to be able to help. She was in hospital for a week and underwent a MRI, CAT scan etc and still nothing. They say they can't find anything. It is constant in her left side. It used to go down her left leg also but not so much now. She says it feels like her inside are being pulled apart and when the pain eases her left side feels heavy. She has had a massage machine to see if it is muscle related with still no success. It started before Christmas 2012 and had stayed getting worse and worse. She can't take anymore. Can anybody help us???

"Look up New York Times article.. "
Hernias in Women, a hidden agony.
If large ovarian cysts, could be a result of a torsion left undiagnosed /untreated for a while.

I like the name and I wish that Doctors would realize that we as women do know our own bodies, but they always have to guess again and again and then 9 out of 10 times we were right all along and could have saved all the pain and misery if they would only listen to the symptoms, I had a Gynocologist one time that used to say that very same thing, he said some doctors were more interested in the pay me your co-pay than just listening to you, with certain things that are re-ocurring like yeast infection, or sinus infection if you have things and know what it feels like to have it why can't they just write or call you in meds instead of having you come in and have to wait just to have them say you had what you already know you had .

I know it's been a year so I really hope by now she has some relief. I just wanted to mention her symptoms sound like mine. I have SIJD. SI JOINT DYSFUNCTION. It's terrible unexplainable pain. My injections in my SI joint helped alot. Unfortunately I am once again in pain needing another injection.

I'm a 31 yo. Have most of the same symptoms. It started out just in my groin on the right side. Pain got so bad I started getting stomach sick. I thought it was due to my birth control a copper iud. After a trip to hospital they did xray and said it was fine I had pid. After starting meds for that the pain got worse and started to go down my right leg. Worse spots in joints of hip, knee, and ankle, and the very bottom of right foot. Making doing anything very painful from laying down to standing. Another trip to the hospital 4 days later had a cat scan done to still shed no insight on the pain in my right side, but to show a mass in my left kidney that a urologist will be looking into next week. So 4 days after second hospital visit went to Dr and he checked pelvic area and within 2 minutes said it was a hernia. No tests or scans, just said would reevaluate in 2 months. I'm not sure if he was just giving a quick diagnosis due to me going to be checked for possible cancer or if I actually have a hernia. Will find out within the next 2 months...

Please research sacroiliac joint pain and you will see that the symptoms are exactly what you are experiencing. Many doctors do not diagnose this correctly or even think about it - my ortho doc thought the pain was from my back. Mine was diagnosed by a pain management doctor that I saw for a previous neck problem. He cured my neck with injections, hoping he can do the same on this - going for a sacroiliac joint injection next week. I will update after the injection.
This is the most severe pain I have ever had and I have had shoulder and knee operations and a severely broken shattered leg. And also childbirth pain. This is absolutely the WORST pain I have ever had. I cannot weight bear on this leg, climb stairs, sit or stand for periods of time. It was bothersome and took 3-4 months to reach this peak of pain stage. I should have gotten treatment sooner.

The groin pain is just awful, isn't it? I live with chronic pain as most here so. I've commented a few times in this thread. I also had been diagnosed with SI Joint dysfunction and had 5-6 SI joint injections ( it's a tough area to hit right even with flouro). They did nothing for me. It wasn't until my 1st and 2nd far lateral, bi-lateral discectomies that I found relief (the 2nd one included a foraminectomy). I went to a neurosurgeon, not an ortho though. If I had gone with the one surgeon's advice to get an SI fusion after the pain management's SI injections failed, I would have been in a terrible situation as it wasn't my SI joint at all. Thankfully, I didn't choose him. I not only did the SI injections but had months of physio with no improvement and actually had exacerbation of symptoms. I just caution all of us to be sure to get several opinions from different providers. I'm partial to neurosurgeons, but that's me. Best wishes to all.

Matchamaiden (Rebecca) again. I forgot to add something that may or may not be of value to others. I mentioned having 2 far lateral discectomies; the 1st one eliminated the groin pain but it returned quickly. The neurosurgeon who did that first surgery refused to do another MRI to see if I reherniated, which could have caused the return of pain. I searched long and hard for another opinion; surgeons don't like to touch freshly operated on patients of other docs! I ended up in the ER for the 5th day in a row and finally had the MRI...which showed a massive reherniation. I found another willing surgeon to take on the job of fixing me again as I really lost faith in the first one after telling him over and over, "something is wrong! My butt, leg, thigh, side of my vagina and left ovary ( that was no longer there) are killing me!". "Keep giving it time", he said. "Nerves can take up to a year to heal, even longer", he said. The pain got so bad I contemplated taking my own life many times. I know others reading this have felt this way. You aren't alone. So, after crawling and eking my way through our healthcare system, I found an even better neurosurgeon, who listened to me. I got the relief again, but he cautioned me that if the discectomy doesn't hold this time, I may require fusion of L2-3 as my vertebrae are compromised with incredible instability. Please don't give up! Keep advocating to get to the bottom of your pain source. There are so many possible reasons for groin pain and it's very tricky to tease out. Folks here have great advice and show the breadth of the possibilities for causes of this thing called groin pain.

Hi Rose,
I'm in my 30s, otherwise active and healthy. Have severe right sided groin pain, that is localised at the groin and radiates down the upper and inner thigh. I have no other symptoms.
Ultrasounds, CT, and MRI are normal. Gynecologist does not think it's endometriosis. Surgeons said it is not a femoralIt's left to my GP to try to get me a diagnosis...
Nothing touches the pain. Pregablin is effective on the radiating pain in my thigh, but the groin pain is unaffected.

Hi everyone,
Just an update. After months of investigations and excruciating pain, I finally got a diagnosis and cure. Thank God!
I was diagnosed with Meralgia Paraesthetica, a trapped nerve. Apparently it's not that common which explains why it took so long to identify. My symptoms fit the profile to a T.
The treatment (and it's also used to help in diagnosis) is an ultrasound guided injection into the nerve. It takes about 5-10mins, initially the pain shoots up, the first 24hrs are rough. Within 2 weeks it will go down and possibly disappear completely if it's been successful....which I think mine has.
It's important that you don't go cold turkey off your pain meds at this point, even though you're no longer in pain. Plan a gradual reduction so that you don't send your body into severe withdrawal.
Hope my diagnosis helps other people get answers too.
Best wishes

I wrote last year about groin pain.I had both hips replaced, but groin pain re-appeared after op on 2nd hip.As it wasn't too bad, I put up with it.In January, I had a fall, twisting as I went down.Luckily no damage was done to the new hip, BUT what it did do was get rid of the groin pain!I am now firmly convinced it was atrapped nerve and the fall released it. I am more active now, bending over to pick things up, and once again the groin is hurting slightly.I am not bending down if I can help it now,I use a pair of long handled bbq tongs.
I still have pain in lower back, thighs and stiffness and pain in the legs.Probably connected to the neuropathy in my feet.

WOW ! I have had mine since christmas eve, and continued to get worse. It is now feb 17th ! 2017, Been to Dr, had hip xray, severe pain in left groin/adductor muscle is what Dr's Dx is: wants me to start PT. I am in so much pain I do nothing but walk a little bit and have to lay down. My pelvis and hip /groin area feels like it will give out. its so scary ! Im a RMA, so I know about the Health Care Field. Patients get passed on from specialist to specialist ! I still have no answers other than that. The Dr will not orer an MRI or CT. The Xray was normal. I am 61. I had a complete hysterectomy so it is not related to ovaries, ,etc I am so sick and tired of the pain nothing helps, not ice, heat, rest NOTHING. when I can get up from laying or sitting there is a 'cilck' sound in near my crease in my left groin/thigh area. The Dr says the hip joint is trying to align. I hope you all find your answers, because I still have nothing but pain !
