Severe groin pain

Hi.. My sister is experiencing severe pain in her left groin area. She is in tears every night and no one seems to be able to help. She was in hospital for a week and underwent a MRI, CAT scan etc and still nothing. They say they can't find anything. It is constant in her left side. It used to go down her left leg also but not so much now. She says it feels like her inside are being pulled apart and when the pain eases her left side feels heavy. She has had a massage machine to see if it is muscle related with still no success. It started before Christmas 2012 and had stayed getting worse and worse. She can't take anymore. Can anybody help us???

I too have been experiencing intense groin pain for MONTHS that had become so bad it was radiating down the front of my thigh and making it more and more difficult to walk, get in and out of my car, or do anything much normally.

    UNTIL...THIS very week!

It came to me that I went through something very similar during my 2nd pregnancy. I tend to sleep on my side and back then I had issues with cyatic pain through my last trimester...in addition to hip and back pain that was absolutely debilitating.  ... My mother is an occupational therapist and she clued me in on how, when sleeping on our sides our hips and thighs can tend to "scissor cross" onto and over each other while we lay there instead of staying level/parallel. And when we sleep that way for several hours night after night...it can become a real problem to our overall hip/thigh/spine alignment.

Remembering this this week and what I did to help me waay back then...I decided to start sleeping with 2 pillows between my knees and thighs as I slept on my side.  IT HAS DONE ME WONDERS! And the positive affect was nigh immediate! It's even helped with the lower back pain I've been suffering with for YEARS!

Now I only have a slight soreness that is steadily decreasing as I keep this way of sleeping going. I can tell the pain is fading by the day.smile

I know this remedy won't help in all cases but it's DEFINITELY worth giving a try.smile It has truly helped me...painwise, sleep wise, mobity-wise and mood-wise. smile

Hope it helps your sister too!!smile

I had a left hip replacement last May andI truly have a new hip with no pain" The right hip was replaced in November and is ok, but I still had pain in the groin and down the front of the thigh.GP said I did not need an ultra sound and only referred me for an X-ray, which showed nothing.Orthopaedic surgeon had recommended an ultra sound! THEN, 3 weeks ago, I fell ..on my new hip.Had another x-ray which showed no damage, BUT my groin pain has gone, Did my fall put something back in place?Since my first op., I have been sleeping with a pillow between my knees...it makes a huge difference. I will continue to do so.

I heard that the groin area hurts like H if you have arthritisome in your hips. I think that is true for me. The pain is so bad, I have both sides hurting often. All I can do is hold and push hard on them and cry....Sorry no good news

    Hi,

Having  been in medicine for over 30 yrs, I will try & put my best spin on this problem. Groin pain is usually related to the hip. I know, because I've had it, on & off, for years. It could be osteo arthritis, or even something as simple as misalignment of the hips. If she drives she must stop putting one leg into the car first, then the other. I always sit a 90 degree angle, sitting on the outer edge of the seat, & then swing both legs in at the same time. Using this method will help enormously. It could be a trapped nerve, but I doubt it.

Is the pain worse when walking? If so, ask her to walk backwards to see if this pain is just as bad. If the answer is that it is easier to walk backwards then it is definitely the hips.

      Hi Sue,

?Are you a medic? I tried walking backwards and there is no pain, whereas there is a lot of pain and it's quite difficult to walk forwards.

?I'm a healthy woman in my 30s. All my scans and X-ray came back normal. What should my GP be looking for?

      Many thanks

WOW ! I have had mine since christmas eve, and continued to get worse. It is now feb 17th ! 2017, Been to Dr, had hip xray, severe pain in left groin/adductor muscle is what Dr's Dx is: wants me to start PT. I am in so much pain I do nothing but walk a little bit and have to lay down. My pelvis and hip /groin area feels like it will give out. its so scary ! Im a RMA, so I know about the Health Care Field. Patients get passed on from specialist to specialist ! I still have no answers other than that. The Dr will not orer an MRI or CT. The Xray was normal. I am 61. I had a complete hysterectomy so it is not related to ovaries, ,etc I am so sick and tired of the pain nothing helps, not ice, heat, rest NOTHING. when I can get up from laying or sitting there is a 'cilck' sound in near my crease in my left groin/thigh area. The Dr says the hip joint is trying to align. I hope you all find your answers, because I still have nothing but pain !

Thats interesting. My Dr thinks my hip has to keep aligning being I hear a click and once it clicks near my groin/hip I can straighten my body up.

I've experienced the same pain in my left groin area, which radiates into my abdominal area as well. This has been an ongoing problem since 2009. It began with a pop in my pelvic area in 2008, in 2009 the pain in my groin area began. It is now 2016 and the pain has intensified significantly. I've been to every type of doctor and the problem, continues.

      Hi Jane,

Can I firstly ask if your hip is a replacement or your own??

    Hi

I have had the same pain for years. It sometimes moves down both sides all the way to my ankles. Occasionally accompanied by numbness. It is prolapse discs in your spine pushing up against your spinal cord. There is not much you can do about it besides strong pain killers. I have had cortisone injections on my spinal area to alleviate some of the pain as well as a micro discectomy surgery but the relief is only temporary. Keeping your weight down and regular exercise will help slow the degeneration in your spine down but there is no permanent fix.

Hi I live in Australia and I had been suffering with quite bad muscle pains down the front of my right leg (one week) and down the back the next week. I went to the doctor for something unrelated and told himaboit the pain. His immediate reaction was that I might have a hernia. Off I went for an ultra sound and it was confirmed. I made an appt with a specialist who confirm the ultrasound and now because it may probably be a work related injury (I have been a carer in a nursing home for the last three years, and not sure if this is relevant but I am 60) I am awaiting for a work cover claim to be approved for surgery. A second doctor actually examined me and even though he couldn't feel the hernia he referred me on. It is a femoral hernia and can be quite dangerous if left untreated. I am currently o light duties; no heavy lifting, pushing or pulling.

Hope this helps someone out there who has been suffering a long time with no apparent clear diagnosis from the medical profession.

Well, I just lost my reply of my case, but basically it is the same horrible pain as everybody elses in the left leg, but in my case caused by golfing--teeing off twisting my body and left leg to the left, but my left foot remaining stationary.   I can hardly walk now due to severe pain.  It's not sciatica.  It's in the groin area, the hip bursitis area, thigh, knee, and leg area above the ankle.  A few days ago, I saw my doctor and she thinks the culprit is the psoas muscle. She gave me a prescription for, but I didn't like it, so I took some old hydrocodone I had.  It knocks the pain if I'm lying down, but if I walk several feet, it all comes back.  She wants me to have my cataract fixed first on Feb. 16 and then address this problem.  I'd rather never have the eye op than have this awful pain.  She showed me some exercises to do on YouTube, but they won't come up.  In th einofshe gave me to read, they suggest an osteopathic physician help with the exercises.  The PT I was going to really brought the pain on big time with the exercises she gave me.  So keep that psoas muscle in mind.  I just don't know yet what to do with it, but will have to squeak about the terrible pain to the doctor again and hope she'll think of how to address the problem.

Thank you for your input.  I'm still taking tests.  Besides an ultrasound in the groin area which tested negative for a blood clot, I've had two XRays on my hip which showed I have arthritis with severe joint space loss.  Two other tests with no results yet were a neurological exam of the whole leg and another ultrasound, this time of the pelvis.  I see the doctor on Feb. 23 and will ask her about your suggestions.
