Severe Hives can it be the pred after a year

Oh my gosh, out of nowhere, I developed the worse case of hives, I mean yesterday out of nowhere all over my body, ran to my primary internist who immediately diagnosed it and since I was due for my afternoon dose of prednisone it was like another miracle, the hives were gone within an hour. Then they came back today, only worse and since I had taken the higher dose in am and the lower in pm it didnt work and now Im in agony with itching, burning and total redness and welts all over. Nothing new in diet, nothing new in house and am wondering if one can develop an allergic reaction to the prednisone.
Dr told me to take a Zantac, I take 150 once daily but he said two take anotehr since it would help and I did but no such luck. I am planning to go to a Dermatologist Monday but not sure I can last that long and may need to go to ER.

There is a slight possiblity but typically predisone is used to treat rashes not cause them. You might look elsewhere. I know you said that there wasn't anything else, but I would keep looking. Do an inventory of your house this weekend. Bath soap, laundry soap and dryer sheets, it could even be a flowering tree that your are reacting too. I don't know where you live but do you have trees starting to bloom now? I wouldn't blame you for going to the ER. Rashes that itch are miserable. Try ice, it will help with the itch without scratching. Good luck on this problem. Wish I could be more help.

TY amkoffee, I was at er last night they said pred helps thats why they gave me the 60mil. I have another severe attack right now, in agony and took second dose of pred and a benedryl so hoping it works fast.
This is awful but the good thing is right after they started me last night obn the high dose I woke this morning feeling awesome, no aches or stifness that I had been experiencing on the 10 mil but they only gave me a five day supply, then I have to go right back to the 10 mil because I dont have enough to do the slow taper. The er Dr said I dont need to but doesnt that sound wrong> I cant imagine dropping so low so fast.

I answered your other post - it's quite safe to 60mg for the allergic response and go staright back to your baseline dose of 10mg. Enjoy being pain-free in the meantime!

This sounds horrendous! I have psoriasis so know what itch feel like and to be covered in hives is an absolute nightmare. Were you out in the sun alot? How are you with yeast? Did you eat or drink alot of one thing? It may not be something new but something that you haven't had in a while! You need to you through everything you did, ate, drank, touched on the original day they came out or the day before they did and see if something comes up. Really hope you can find the cause! If you can make a paste with breadsoda and water and cover the hives, should bring relief to the itch, or aloe vera. Failing that you might need an injection of antihistamine. Really hope this sorts out quickly for you.

I had a temporary breakout of hives after eating "hot and sour" soup once, but it was brief only a few hours at most.

Although you may not have changed anything in your household has there been a change to the ingredients of any products or food you are using? This happened to me a few years ago and again more recently when I used something that previously I had no problem with and the large blotches and itch was something else. You have my sympathy as it is so hard to cope with the itching. Although I was already on an anti histamine for hay fever I had to get another one to ease the itching. I was going on holiday and it was so bad that my GP gave me a letter for A&E. I didn't need to use it. I hope you find the cause and it eases soon.

It is the worse thing Ive ever experienced, worse than when I had adult chicken pox. I have been going over and over any new ingredient I ate and come up with nothing so dont know how I will find the trigger.

It is a listed side effect of pred and it probably could happen at any time. If it is the pred then the only thing that will stop it is stopping the pred - which you can't really do safely and I don't think it is something the ER can do much about more than your doctor did. And the usual treatment for hives is: pred!
You may not have changed anything in the house - but they change cleaning liquid recipes all the time. Often it is flagged up as "new, improved" but equally often they won't admit it. It's happened to me.
I've just scrolled down and seen Silver's post!!! We've been writing at exactly the same time - great minds and all that! You could try getting an antihistamine (as I think I suggested before) and taking a double dose. And what about adding a bit to your morning dose of pred - obviously yesterday's dose was enough to calm things down. And maybe taking enough pred altogether might keep it under control for 24 hours.

EileenH,
Allergies are strange. I broke out in itchy hives and felt terrible. One benadril antihistamine pill made it go away in about a half hour. I am not suggesting that my allegy is what you have but I can not have shrimp, red wine and garlic. If I do have all three at the same meal I have this almost life threating response. It has happened three times in 78 years and each time an antihistamine made it go away. I have no problem with garlic, red wine or shrimp as long as I don't have all three at once. Think Scampi

The A&E doctor is perfectly correct - you can take 60mg for an allergic response and stop as log as you go back to your "base dose" so to speak. That's how pred would be used for something like that in anyone - they would stop at zero, you will stop at 10mg. You need to taper from 10mg, you don't need to taper the 60mg dose.

Hi Sharon, don't worry about going to the 60ml for 5 days, you can do this without tapering and go straight back to your original 10ml. I'm doing it with 40mg for 5 days and will go straight back to 10, its the short duration thats the key. Its great that is worked for the length of time that it did but unfortunate that it takes a few hours to kick in once taken. Would it be better to just take the doses without waiting for the hives to appear? Sincerely hope it sorts it out for you, i can't even imagine how awful it must be. Let us know how you are getting on! xx

Thank you, the ER Dr started me on the 60 mil at a little after midnight, he then told me to take the next does on Sat at dinnertime so thats what the problem is, I always took my 10 by splitting it, 7&1/2 at 4am then 2&1/2 at 4 pm which worked fine and now the timing is all messed up. Once I finsih this 5 day regiman I will just go back to my other and hopefully have no problems. The hives began late afternoon and full blown by 6pm, thats when I take the once a day 60 mil so it doesnt kick in until next morning. Thanks for all you input it is so appreciated and I dont know what I would do without each and every one of you here.
