Severe Hypospadias

This isn't easy..I'm now in my 40s but had severe hypospadias at birth; to the extent my sex wasn't clear, I had no discernable penis.
From the age of 3 there followed 13 years of treatment and 25+ operations to try and correct it. I've never talked openly about it before. At the age of 16 the surgeons still couldn't stop me 'leaking' so I finally had two further operations involving a skin graft to the urethra. Hey presto it was fixed!
I really can't describe the impact it had on me as a child and youth, and the embarrassing situations. In hospital there were many times when it felt like I was 'exhibited' to groups of medics and students, photographed, asked to show my erect penis and on one occasion some poor nurse tasked with identifying the source of my 'leaks' with a felt tip pen. Undoubtedly all with the best of intentions.....The obvious surgery and extent of the scaring also made showering at school and nudity a nightmare.
I don't think there was any choice in my case but to have surgery but I can't deny the experiences of those 13 years have had an impact. I had no girl friends whilst at school or at all until I was in my late twenties, it was then I had my first sexual experience as well. I felt so inadequate I apologised even before we had sex (not the sort of pillow talk girls expect!). I do feel the condition and experiences in hospital robbed me of some of some of the fun and relationships most young men get to enjoy. I still have problems with sensitivity but we manage!!
Amazingly I'm now a father of two boys and very, very happy. My eldest son also had severe hypospadias but this was corrected early on with 2 operations when he was two and he seems fine with it.
I truly hope in severe cases things are better and boys get emotional support if they need it.
