Severe Kidney Pain & Nausea

Hi,

Medical history: Renal Reflux, Bilateral Ureteric Reimplantation, Right Nephrectomy, Recurrent infections & Mild CKD

I've been experiencing severe pain over my left kidney (My only kidney) for 7 days. I've also had really bad nausea with it, and have lost 11 pounds in the last 7 days. Can't eat, anything entering my stomach makes me want to vomit.

I went to A&E on Day 1 of symptoms and had a CT KUB which showed no stones, and nothing abnormal. My GFR is stable at 50, Creatnine was okay, and no infection markers. Urine just showed blood and protein which is normal for me. I was sent home with a prescription for Tramadol and Ciprofloxicin (Antibiotic) just incase it was a hidden UTI.

Fast forward to Day 5, pain is managed by Tramadol but if i dont take it it comes back, but Nausea is worse, so I got back to A&E and get sent for Ultrasound, bloods show dehydration but thats to be expected. Ultrasound shows some dilation but on comparing with old ultrasounds it looks the same. So this time i'm sent home with a script for Cyclizine an anti-sickness.

Day 6 I go back to the hospital to meet the Renal Consultant who says pain could be caused by Nutcracker Syndrome, but not diagnosable by the results i had and that it resolves itself so to continue on Tramadol and Cyclizine till it settles and that she'll see my in a week.

Before I leave she see's how weak I am and decided to give me a few hours of fluids. Got fluids and went home with same management plan... pain relief and anti-sickness. I havent eaten in 24 hours, I have taken in around 200mls in that time, but the hospital dont seem worried, but im panicked, because I've lost 11 pounds in 7 days, and noone knows what the cause of it is.

Does anyone have any ideas of what it is?

How best to deal with it?

And what to do about the struggling to eat and drink?

A Consultant who thought it could be Nutcracker Syndrome said it would correct itself?

Join a Facebook group for Nutcracker Syndrome and you will find that it does NOT correct itself! When you say A&E then you must live in the UK and from my research UK doctors are oblivious and know little about the condition.

I have microscopic blood and protein in my urine and 3 months down the line after many tests I’m no further forward in getting an answer for my pain etc.

    Hello d1990

As someone who had a right nephrectomy many years ago, now have CKD3b for the last 10 years  and frequent UTIs for the last year, I just wanted to wish you good luck and hope that the consultant gets to the bottom of what is going on and is able to treat it to make you better.  If you don't feel reassured, don't forget you can ask for a second opinion.

I meant to add if you don't already have it, try eating a small pot of 'live' yoghurt daily, and before taking any medication.  It will help to line the stomach and therefore it could help with the nausea.  Another good tip when you have nausea is to sip the sports drinks.  I assume you have had a liver function test?
