Severe left knee pain after total left hip replacement

Posted , 12 users are following.

I have written on the blog,  I had total left knee replacement July 18 of this year and was doing fine for about 4 weeks then I got a severe pain my left knee (the left knee of the hip replacement). I have had numerous xrays and nothing shows up.  i am going for a bone scan tomorrow and I just cannot understand why the pain.  The surgeon looked puzzled so I went to my family physician and he ordered a bone scan.  I feel that if this does not show anything I will want an MRI on the hip and knee.  They call it an occult fracture (a possiblity) I do not want more surgery and I have been through enough.  Anyone else out there had complications in the knee after total hip replacement and what was recommended for you.  Thanks for listening...

Hello I have had both hips replaced and once I feel able the surgeon will be doing both of me knees. Although I am a little apprehensive in getting those done...

Both of my knees are bad and have been for over 20yrs.. so I am suffering with them whilst getting over the bi lateral THR 7 weeks ago.  And then I have managed to sprain my ankle how I have no idea...

      Hi June,

?I am needing both knees replaced but consultant started with hips,  knees are worse now though, yesterday whilst out I lost all power in one knee and if I had not had my crutches I would have been on the floor.

?The knees are the weight bearing joint so take more of a battering...

My consultant has said that I will only get so much mobility back from the bilateral THR... and until both knees have been done I need to remain on walking aids.

?I knew all this before the op... but had prayed once the hips were down some magic would happen and I would no longer have knee problems.  HA HA>>>>   wishful thinking.

?Do not feel down we will all be bionic and pain free eventually.

      ?Good luck

      ?Elaine

Thanks Elaine, but today is our Thanksgiving (not sure where you are from and I have alot of company coming so I have been on my feet all morning.  They will bring my Dad from the home for a little while, as he is dementia (not altz) just severe senility, and at least for once the family will be together.  My son helps me out alot when he comes.  I can only hope that our knees get fixed but I  don't want another surgery so soon, but the pain persists... Take care

?I have taken the decision to wait at least a 6months before I will even consider having one of my knees done....

I have lived with pain for over 10yrs but want to be fully recovered before I embark on another journey.

4 yrs ago I had a THR on my left leg. The operation went more or less well, at the beginning my left leg was about 2 cm longer than the right leg, but after a time it reduced to 1 cm. I didnt have any problems and I was doing sport and dancing like a spring chicken after about 6 months.  Early this year my right hip started playing up and in the end I had the second hip replaced in July. I woke up after the operation and saw that I had bruising all around my right knee and it was swollen. When I left hospital I had physio but this was for my knee as I had a lot of pain from my groin to my knee and the ligaments around the knee. In early September I went back to the doctor and complained about my knee and he saw that the bruising had travelled down to my ankles (gravity of the internal blood). He ordered a MRI and saw that I had a tourn meniscus which I had then repaired through another operation. (by cutting the tourn part back) It's now October and I still have pain in my knees and ligaments when walking. The physio has actually only been treating me for the knee, (my hip is fine and I can bend and touch my toes as before). I will be going to the doctor again this Friday to see why I am still suffering. It is so frustrating as it seems that I am in a worse predicament as before my hip replacement.

Hi Eliaine its June here how are you doing?  Been thinking of you. My kne has settled dow after 2 cortizone shots.  It is shot but I don't want to do anything for a long time as I have had 2 surgeries *includes hip" within one year.  My hip is doing great but my knee still flares up everyso often and hurts like hell.  I just have to live with it I guess.  It is such a downer as I thought after getting this hip done I would be good to go.  Not such luck.  Anyway I hope you are doing better and the pain has lessened.  Take cae and let me know how you are doing, thinking of you

I am told that one of the most common referred pains after hip fracture/hr is in the knee, mines driving me nuts and also going for MRI to check and make sure it wasn't damaged more when I fell than they first thought

Let's hope that the MRI and my bone scan show something that will benefit us in our health issues good luck and let me know how things are progressing.  I wish you the very best.  I believe that I willeventually need an MRI as I stated earlier...

I hope knee pain can be anialated LOL its so debilitating and has no purpose, I had xray and no fracture so don't know if its referred or from damage, mine hurts to press in places does yours, I wonder if that's possible with referred pain.

Yes mine hurts Alexandria to touch.  At times the left part of the knee if hot and swollen.  I am still so disappointed in the hip surgeon as he looked at me like I was an idiot and did nothing so  went to my family Dr. and he is the one that is giving me the bone scan and if that does not show up I want an MRI, which I feel should be done in the first place.  My hip feels great since the replacement but as I said my left knee is killing me and it hurts to touch.  All the best to you..

Had a THR on left hip and left knee is playing up.  I'm hypermobile and it keeps sublaxing in my sleep (partial dislocation).  Probably due to the monkey walking after op.  I'm hoping it settles down.

Sorry to be thick but what exactly is monkey walking? Is yours referred pain or just down to the hypermobility

Hi both - yes sorry monkey walking is just a limp.  I started off with monkey, then went to Pengiun and then duck.

Not sure if referred pain.  My kneecaps used to occasionally lock/pop off but now it's really frequent.  That's why I think it could be down to my altered walking for that initial period.  I had a lot of referred pain in my leg up to week ten though.  Knee was worst.
