Severe left knee pain after total left hip replacement

Posted , 12 users are following.

I have written on the blog,  I had total left knee replacement July 18 of this year and was doing fine for about 4 weeks then I got a severe pain my left knee (the left knee of the hip replacement). I have had numerous xrays and nothing shows up.  i am going for a bone scan tomorrow and I just cannot understand why the pain.  The surgeon looked puzzled so I went to my family physician and he ordered a bone scan.  I feel that if this does not show anything I will want an MRI on the hip and knee.  They call it an occult fracture (a possiblity) I do not want more surgery and I have been through enough.  Anyone else out there had complications in the knee after total hip replacement and what was recommended for you.  Thanks for listening...

June, my heart and prayers go out to you. I can understand the position you're in and your inability to handle anymore surgery at this time. My mom has dementia and my dad has Altzheimers and even though they currently live in a personal care facility, they take a great deal of my time and focus.

Your idea to avoid stressing your knee further is a good one as well as investigating with your family doctor and surgeon any non-surgical options that will allow you to delay surgery. I hope your family, friends and coworkers give you the compassion and support you need. If you need anyone to talk to, I'm a great listener. My best wishes and hopes for you and your family.

Hello junegro. I'm new to the forum and I realise that your post is from a while back, but your knee problem is similar to my own experience after d/h/r.

My first op. was about 3 years ago and was performed on my left hip. When I came too in the recovery ward, I was in excrutiating pain from my knee which was extremely swollen. When the surgeon came to do the post op. examination, I asked him what had caused the damage to my knee and he explained that they use a procedure to dislocate the hip joint, which entails a specific gripping and twisting of the knee to achieve this. If there is resistance, then they increase the pressure till it separates the joint.

The pain and swelling to my knee was the result of my hip joint being difficult to dislocate, which begs the question, was my replacement necessary? Unfortunately, I'll never know the answer, however it left me feeling extremely worried about the operation on my right hip which was scheduled in six weeks time.

The day of the operation arrived and although the swelling had reduced a bit, I was still in a lot of pain and unable to take any weight on my left side. During the pre-op examination, I explained that I lived in a top floor flat ( 4 flights ) which would mean that I would be unable to go home after the recovery time unless I was manually carried up the stairs.

At this point, the decision was made to give me a steroid injection to the knee, to prevent the operation being cancelled. The result of this was remarkable, the relief of the pain was immense and this enabled the second operation to go ahead. Needless to say, my last words to the surgeon was " please be careful with my other knee."

Unfortunately, the same problem was evident when I woke up in the recovery room. My knee was up like a balloon and the now familiar pain had me in agony.

Three years later, I am still on very strong painkillers and have more or less resigned myself to the fact that pain management is all I can do to counteract the damage that has been done. I did have more injections a couple of months after the second operation, but unfortunately, they only worked for a limited period.

Sorry about the length of this post, but for anyone out there who has experienced knee problems after h/r , you have my sincerest sympathy.

      hi sunny,

warm welcome to the hippies forum ..

so sorry to hear about your knee pain - how long ago was your 2nd THR? were there xrays taken from your knees that shows the damage done?

I had significant swelling after 1st THR (not abnormal, but still..) and asked surgeon to please handle me with care while already on Operation table -- I guess mine listened as I had no swelling to speak of after 2nd THR ...

What you were told makes sense though ...

Many members here have problems with their knees post THR - Maybe you can start your own discussion and share this information? Right now only members who initially responded to this post will get this ....

thank you and please come back anytime

      big warm hug

      renee

I had a total replacement 9 weeks ago and ever since waking from the op I have had severe pain in the knee - same knee as replacement. Both surgeon and physio can find no injury. Surgeon said in 5 weeks time if I still have pain he will do an MRI scan.
