Severe muscle pain when I wake up?

5 days ago I rapidly developed the symptoms of flu, namely fever, headache, severe muscle pains, exhaustion etc. I spent a couple of days unable to move from my bed, sweated and shivered and ate very little. I did not go to the doctor because I understand that this virus is highly contagious and I have kept well hydrated. I have limited my medication to paracetamol and ibuprofen.
After four days I started to feel a little better. My temperature is now normal and I don't have a headache. When I went to bed, the-night-before-last I was feeling quite positive because the muscle pains had also gone.
When I woke up yesterday morning I experienced pain that I have never felt before; severe, tearing, crippling pains in every muscle (and I mean EVERY muscle) of my body. It took me 30 minutes to get out of bed, I was very worried, my first thought was that I had been poisoned. I stayed out of bed all day yesterday and I kept moving all day (I have three children) and by last night the muscle pains had gone completely, I was feeling positive again when I went to bed. I had no temperature, no pains, no headache, my appetite was back.
At two o'clock this morning I woke up with the same severe muscle pains all over my body. The pain is excruciating, almost unbearable, and it has taken me an hour to get myself out of bed, slide downstairs (because my legs are two painful to bend) and write this email.
Can this really be attributed to the Flu? Can the muscle pain on its own really be this bad? And only after I have been to sleep? I thought sleep was the time I would recover, not the other way round, now I'm scared to go back to bed.
Or could this be something else?
Please help me.
