Severe Pain In Lower Back and Hip

Posted , 11 users are following.

Was doing quite well at 10 mg daily of prednisone. I decided to crawl under my house and see why the condensate pump was not discharging water. That night things started going wrong with my back and legs. Last Friday is when I crawled under the house. Today I have severe pain from my left lower back down to my ankle. I also have some of the same on my right side, but much milder? Do any of you think this is PMR related, or just some kind of strain? At the time it did not feel like I was doing anything that would bother me?

    Hi

i would wait it out, because maybe it a strain, or just check with your doctor.

You could try taking a painkiller and see if it helps. If it does it is possibly not PMR but damage when crawling around!

ptolemy makes a very good suggestion. However it sounds to me like you have injured yourself and pinched nerve in the process. Probably the sciatic nerve and that is why you're having pain down the leg. I think you need to go see a doctor so that he can do an x-ray or even better an MRI of your back to see if you did do damage you didn't know you had done. I have suffered from chronic back pain for 13 years and catching back pain early can keep it from becoming chronic. Please take care of yourself and keep us posted

If you have PMR your muscles are intolerant of acute exercise - and really, crawling under the house isn't the sort of activity most of us with PMR could even dream of never mind carry out!

It sounds as if you may have strained your low back muscles and they are irritating/pinching the sciatic nerves - most likely the piriformis but it could be others. It may not be PMR itself but made worse because of the PMR. It certainly resembles some of the back problems I have due to myofascial pain syndrome - which is often found alongside PMR and is caused by the same inflammatory substances but they are localised in trigger spots, one pair of which is in the lower back, where the baby's dimples are, and in the muscle fascia. If it is a muscle problem - x-rays will show nothing, just rule out other damage.

Maybe that's why I have barely been able to walk for the last two days. I guess that's a reason why I can't get off of prednisone. I worked as a carpenter most of my life and every time my home needs repair I do it myself, if only takes a few minutes. My doctor's always tell me to do what ever I can tolerate. It did not hurt that bad while I crawling under the house, it only took about 30 seconds or less of crawling. Whenever I get over these PMR flares I always wind up over doing it, and I have really got myself into a bad situation, and it took less than a minute.

Ive has PMR for over 5 years. I find there has been times where I overstrain a muscle. One year I got on my bicycle as I can still cycle quite a bit. I cycled 15 miles in early spring when I had been quite sedentary all winter. The pain between my shoulder blades was awful. My only relief was a massage and the soreness was gone the next day. I feel PMR just sits and waits to find a weak and overstrained muscle and it attacks!

    Hi gene15655,

i have had two bouts with a very painful piriformis.  I was carefully doing things with my PMR in mind but I still ended up injured.  I went to my physio person and had a few appointments with her to fix it.

She also gave me some stretches to do and since I’ve done them frequently I haven’t had a recurrence (fingers crossed)!
