Severe pneumonia - chance of survival?

Posted , 2 users are following.

My brother has been in ICU now for 8 days with severe pneumonia on both lungs and swine flu. He is 47 and previous to this, healthy. He is heavily sedated as he was very delirious and is still heavily reliant on the ventilator. Every day they say that he is still the same and very ill but they have said that he has improved a little since he was admitted. Does anyone know of anyone else who has been on the ventilator for a long time and with such slow recovery and still survived? They are going to do a tracheotomy now for the ventilator so looks like he's not coming off it any time soon. We are trying to stay hopeful.

    Hi Liz,

Sorry to hear about your brother.

. I know of 2 people who have been seriously ill with pneumonia and are still here to tell the tale!

Stay positive its going to take time but he's getting the best care now.

At least his condition hasn't deteriorated since being in hospital, this must be a good sign.

Take care, lookafter yourself he needs you to be on top form!

Hope this helps, I know you must be frantic. xx

Thanks Rachel - that's encouraging! He seems so ill and progress is so slow but I suppose we just have to be patient.

Hi Rachel, after 2 weeks he pulled the ventilator out himself and (luckily) started recovering from then smile He's steadily progressing now.

    Fantastic news,

It's going to be a while before he's back to 100% but at least he'll get there! x
