I have only recently been diagnosed with RA, I'm off work at the moment as I have SEVERE pain in my shoulder... It's to the point I can't hardly move n feels like it's dislocated or something... Codeine is not touching the pain at all... Does anyone else get this severity of pain?

Hello Caraj. I've only recently been diagnosed as well and like you suffer excruciating shoulder pain. I am also prescribed Codeine as well as Naproxen (anti inflammatory) and in the last week Nefopam which I have to admit is now only just starting to have some effect. Nefopam works differently to some other drugs in the way it blocks pain and is being used more and more following surgery. You have my sympathy. I know just how much pain you'll be in.

Hello again Matron, what is Nefopam? I wonder whether it is something my doc would allow me to try. I did notsleep again last night, despite only having a couple of hours yesterday morning and having that walk! I have had about an hour this morning which is just ridiculous now, I don't understand it at all x

Hello. Nefopam is a non opioid pain killer recommended for joint, muscle, dental pain as well as post surgery pain. I'd never heard of it until last week but I've researched it fully and it has good write ups. I would recommend it. I take 2 tablets 3 x a day. I find if I take the full dose ie 6 tablets during the day it helps me during the night. The pain is less severe. I also continue to take the codeine and occasionally the Naproxen. Another name for Nefopam is Acupan.

Yes, me too. I cant hold anything or put a coat on without severe pain. I have given up on bras! Lol i have been offered injections but they have not worked in the past and have been MUCH much worse for a couple of weeks afterwards so I havepassed on those. Holding a mug of coffee requires careful thinking and definitely two hands. I have to switch hands cleaning my teeth too. It really is awful, but my hips are still the worst. If you manage to find some relief please share. Oh just remembered doc gave me anti inflammatory gel to try so I will try that x

Hello Caraj, I get that too after I've lifted something too heavy. When that pain is added to the pain I have in every other area in my body, it makes it nearly impossible to do anything. I have to wash my hair with one hand because I can't lift with the affected shoulder. My chiropractor actually diagnosed me with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome when I'd go in with that pain. Lying down makes it worse. None of my General Practitioners or my Rheumatoloigst will even look at that diagnosis because it was diagnosed by a chiropractor which they don't believe are 'real' doctors. Yet, he's the ONLY person who has given me relief when I have a bad flare up. Hope you can get some relief soon. I know how awful it can be.

    Hi,

Im in other forum discussions here but since I have my first apt next week with a rheumatologist to determine if I infact have RA , I wanted to check in with some of you. I too have horrible pain going on in one shoulder. Have had carpal tunnel for years and trouble with one hip. My sed rate was 45 with a positive ANA test. My shoulder has really been bothering me and it's hard to move around. I can no longer do lengthy tasks with my hands. And lots of neck pain. I dread an RA diagnoses but fear that's what it is.

Yes Caraj I have the same thing. Everyone looks at me crazy when I tell them the pain is excruiating. I cannot sleep, I cannot get in any position to relieve the pain. It's horrible and it always happens at night so I have to suffer until the next day. I just had my 4th flare and it was in the shoulder and had to wait the next day and the doctor gave me a cortisone shot. It's been about 36 hours and I am starting to move my arm freely but carefully because it is still tender. I did not have anything but motrin and naprasone and I told the doctor they are useless I am sick of taking them
