Severe swelling after hip replacement.

Hi everyone. I am 10 days post op and my leg is very swollen from my groin to my ankle. It is also painful too..

I can live with the pain so long as I know at some point it will subside. My worry is that the swelling on the leg is not going down.

Can anyone tell me if this has happened to them and if so how lonh before it goes away. Also is there anything I can physically do to help this......Thanks......Nick.

I am on my 12th day. I have swelling and it started on the fifth day. I am not having  A problem getting around and I use ice packs on my ford care and have especially after exercise. I have been practicing with a cane. But I will need to use the walker when I go outside walking. It is hard  to know how Our swelling compares.  Hi reading of this site tells me that there may be many days ahead of swelling. But I will keep at it with ice and try not to overdo walking. Hope this helps. I will be doing a complete update of my chronoluge after I see the doctor on Tuesday.  I should add that I have more discomfort than pain. I have not taken any pain meds. My procedure was posterior.

I am on my 9th day and also posterior & have quite a bit of pain as well as discomfort. Plus swelling but that isn’t too bad considering. I’ve been taking paracetamols but I’m sure I need more pain meds which I haven’t got. I think you’re doing amazingly well tnuhr, I can only get around using my walker, I can’t imagine being strong enough to use just a cane like you.  Im still shattered and have to change my nightie 3 times throughout the night. I don’t know if anyone else gets this wet but my nightshirt feels like it’s just come out of the washing machine.

Sorry you are having so much pain. I should say when I walk with a cane it is in the house. I make sure I have my free hand ready to grab on to something.    I am surprised that there is so much variation With each patient. Keep icing and hang in there.

Hi Nick has it been like this from the beginning? If so are you going to bed for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Nurse told me to do this and it does get rid of fluid. I cannot remember how long it took for mine to go down. Would get GP to check it out if you are worried. I had terrible pain post op for some weeks. I had nerve damage but Amitryptaline sorted that out quickly x

Hi auntie what symptoms did you have with your nerve damage (in that how did you know it was nd?) hope you don’t mind me asking..... it’s just that sometimes something’s said and it helps.

    Dear Nick

Stretch stockings day and night can be a great help.

I, too, had swelling and black and blue from my groin to my ankle. It gradually got a lot better after two weeks. My PT recommended ice and elevation. Also, switch off from elevation to just lie down without elevation. Change positions ofter (sit, walk, lie down). Follow hip precautions if given. Generally take it easy at this point. Are you taking any pain meds? My PT gave me some gentle exercises to do.I have a hard time sitting still, so I was told to slow down. At three weeks, I went out for PT  twice a week. I finished this past week. I have exercises to do at home. I am 9 weeks post op posterior approach. Good Luck! Check back in.

My leg was swollen and my foot was HUGE! My PT said that was due to how they do the surgery that fluid rushes in. The key was to ice, ice, and more ice!! Also, getting up and moving, I eventually got up, or tried to, very commercial on TV or so and tried to walk a bit more. Increasing the circulation, however slight helps. Good luck!

    Nick,

You sound like me, I was great after surgery, then day 10 I swelled out of control, skin started to split on my thi, big red lines and itched like crazy, you couldn't touch my thi at all or pain was terrible. They sent me to er for blood clot test, that was negative. surgeon said I might have over did it as I am 40 and have crews working on jobs that my wife drove me to see to make sure things were ok. I had one PT visit day before swelling, maybe that did it. Most important is make sure no blood clots! Then they had me lie on my back for a week in bed, with a double ace wrap from toes to groin, and as much ice as I good handle. Only get out of bed to hit the toilet. The swelling slowly went down, I was left with blood in my knee and it took a week at PT just to get knee to bend again. The surgeon told me that about 1 out of 100 hip jobs he does, for some reason the patient swells like I did. He cant say why, he said some of his messiest surgeries, ugly clean ups , he thought this one will have problems and they don't??? he said mine was one of the cleanest and yet I swelled. They had me coming in for a checkup every 3 days during swelling because it was so bad. The best thing I did was order 2 really good big ice packs. one covers whole but cheek, the other covers the whole groin/thi. I remember sliding my leg out of bed when swollen and when it hit the ground a rush of pain was so bad I almost blacked out. that was the loose blood pushing down the leg.

Make sure no blood clots! then Ice and elevate and don't move!

    Good luck!
