Severe toxic reaction to flucloxacillan

Hi

I was prescribed flucloxacillan by my GP for a skin infection. Three weeks after completing the course of tablets I started to feel unwell. I had severe headaches, vomiting, aching bones, fever and stomach pain. My GP could not give me an appointment for over a week and so I contacted NHS Direct. (Glad I did!!) They told me to go straight to A&E! I did and was admitted to hospital immediately. After blood tests, xrays, ERCP and a liver biopsy I was told that I have had a severe toxic reaction to flucloxacillan which has caused cholestatic jaundice. I was in hospital for three weeks in total. I am still having blood tests twice a week and seeing the consultant once a week as my liver function tests are still extremely high. I still feel very unwell and I have been told that it could take three to six months before my liver completely recovers and I am fit again!! Prior to this I was fit and healthy and very rarely (if ever) visited the doctors. Be warned!!!!

one week after taking a 7 day course of Flucloxacillin 500gm for an infected insect bite, I am still suffering from severe diarrhoea and now have blood stained mucus in the stools. Although I do not feel too unwell, apart from fatigue, I think I will go back to my GP just in case there might be serious lasting damage such as yours.

    HI

i was in hospital being treated for a bad infection in my leg, they put me on fluxloxacillon i became very unwell after several days, so they ran some blood tests they found that i was sensetive to this antibiotic, they took me off this straight away and put me on another antibiotic which worked and cleared the infection without any further problems.I was lucky, i did not encounter severe reactions to what other people have.I know now to stay away from that antibiotic if i can.(BEWARE) sad

We feel like we are living a nightmare at the moment.

My mother took Floxicllin in mid march when her Dr prescribed it for a suspected skin reaction.

On the 8th of May her skin began to look Jaundiced, we took her to the NHS drop in centre the next day,but where told \"she has to see her own GP after the Easter break\".

GP ran bloods which confirmed she was Jaundiced(pretty obvious to anybody)

Gp said she would refer us to hospitals\"urgent clinic\" takes approx 2 weeks!!!

We pressurised the Gp a lot to get mum an ultra sound on 24th April she was admitted within an hour and shes still in hospital now.

CT scan showed nothing, neither did ERCP ( this procedure gave her panreatitis tho)

2nd ultra sound showed her liver is inflamed.

Bile level in blood still not reducing and today nausea, low tummy pains and passing mucus every 20mins or so.

Consultant says biopsy next step as feels the Fluxocillin most probably the cause but he needs to be sure.

shes getting more ill as the days go on.
