Severely Dehydrated

I am posting this for my wife who doesn’t suffer with IBS but has Crohn's disease and has a stoma, which acts up in a similar way to IBS.

In the last five months she has been admitted to Hospital several times because she has become severely dehydrated.

AS with IBS you are loosing the salts and minerals from your body which water wont replace.

This brings me to the question, does anyone use or know of any supplement you can take to help maintain an acceptable level salts and minerals in your body to prevent becoming severely dehydrated

OK janet thanks for your reply.

The only problem her GP just dishies out Loperamide to slow down the amount of time you go to the loo.

I hope her GP listens and can give her something that tops up your body salts and minerals, unless you can take somthing like Dioralyte every day

Hi paul, i don't know a lot about this, but i have heard that unsweetened coconut water is meant to have the electrolytes needed (not sure if its got everything or just part of what is needed), it might be worth looking into even if its just for use in the meantime whilst waiting to see her doctor

I wish i knew a lot about this to help your wife, it sounds painful what she's going through. Anyways i've just done some research and the most popular one is Pedialyte or Dioralyte. The reviews look good on amazon and other health sites but as always, i'd recommend your wife and yourself to have a look at it to see if it will be suitable for her. I did some research on oral rehydration solutions as well and most people stated that gatorade helped however some said it can make it worse and actually make you even more dehydrated so this may be too risky. Keep a lookout for diuretics as they can contribute to dehydration as well and if her G.P does not prescribe something, i'd recommend going to boots, the pharmacists always recommend something to help. I wish you and your wife all the best.

One more thing, supposedly pickle juice is great for rehydration and apparently just drinking water alone may actually wash out sodium and potassium.

I was recommended to try Ensure Plus dietary drinks (Abbott Nutrition drinks) made by Abbott Laboratories.

I only purchased 3 x 220ml bottles to try in different flavors, but made the mistake of getting the milk shake version, which are no good for my wife, but they make a fruit juice version so I will try and get them.

In the UK these are prescribed by doctors, but you can buy them off the net or from certain high street pharmacies.

So once I get the the right ones she will try these, as they are supposed to replace a meal and provide the daily Minerals, salts, protein and nutrition you need.

We will ask her GP if they can be prescribed, but if not we will have to buy them.

The bit that gets me, in the USA you can buy these drinks in grocery stores, but here in the (uk) they are mainly on prescription with only a few places selling them.

That's good, hopefully the fruit juice version will be effective for your wife when you receive them.

I hope that her G.P will agree to prescribe it when you next see him/her. Be firm about it though, some of the G.Ps I see always try to get out of prescribing things and I know how expensive it can be when you find an effective remedy which has to be shipped from abroad.

That is true, I guess they're more strict over here on medicines than in the U.S, which has its downfalls amongst its benefits, hopefully it all goes well though!

Wishing you and your wife the best, hope she feels better soon!
