Shadow on Mammogram

Posted , 3 users are following.

I had a routine mammogram done 6 days ago and was called back, because of a shadow on the mammogram. Has anyone else heard of this. My anxiety is through the roof.

    Hi Jo,

Women are called back many times after a screening mammogram to have a diagnostic mammogram performed. Nine times out of ten it is nothing, but my own philosophy regarding health issues is not to worry about having some dread disease unless you actually have it. If you have the disease, do everything you can to learn more about and treat it. Knowledge is power. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, go to a large medical center for the best treatment options for you.

I have had breast cancer, and lived, two strokes and lived, and almost died three times (not from the cancer or strokes.). You can be diagnosed with cancer and continue to thrive. I never even cried.

While I don't wish it on anyone, you can go on.

You didn't mention your age or family history of breast cancer. If there is a family history of breast cancer, push for genetic testing, as that will guide your decision making, if the biopsy results are positive.

    Best Wishes,

Please let me know the results,

Thank you Merry! I've been doing a lot of reading and did see that on average out of 100 mammograms performed about 10 people get called back and of those 3 may need to have a biopsy for further testing. I am 49 years old and have been getting regular mammograms since I was 45. There is no history of breast cancer in my family. Your words have actually made me want to be proactive about this and not live totally in fear especially since I don't have all the answers yet. I have another mamogram setup for October 7th and if needed they will do an ultrasound the same day. Thank you for replying, it was just what I needed to hear. I love your positivity and strength!

      Thank you again,

      Hi Jo,

I worried I might have been too rough on you, but I firmly believe that knowledge is power.

I am a Nurse Practitioner in the States. I used to conduct breast clinics and would detect breast cancer in women. Fortunately, with

3-D digital mammography, breast cancer is being detected much earlier than previously.

The tumor is sent to Mayo Clinic for sequencing of markers, and the surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists base the treatment on the tumor type and grade, receptor status to estrogen, progesterone, herceptin, and tumor markers.

I wish you the best. Please let me know when you get your results. I saw my breast cancer on the screen, and already knew when the radiologist was stumbling around, trying to tell me I had breast cancer. I told him, "What you're trying to tell me is I have breast cancer. "

Hey Merry, I just wanted to update you on my repeat mammogram today. After having images taken in 3 different positions, the radiologist said it was just some dense tissue. I wanted to thank you for your advice of not worrying about having a disease unless you have it..it really gave me strength over the past week! I'll try to continue that philosophy and share it with anyone who needs it!

      Thank you,
