Sharp pain in hip

Hi all

I went swimming this afternoon and I put my foot against the pool as I turned to swim back and pushed off. I got a very sharp pain in my hip. I had to stop for a second and just hold onto the side while caught my breath. I carried on afterwards and did a few more lengths, with gentle turns! Since then tho my hip is aching and certain bending/twisting movements are causing a sharp pain.

I'm a little concerned as I am 13 weeks post op but have had a fantastic recovery. I haven't used any walking aids, pain relief etc since the first week and this is the first 'mishap'

I have had a very busy Xmas and new year, lots of dancing and I've walked miles lol, but felt fine after - just this today and I am a bit worried.

Any advice or words of wisdom?

I woukd go get it checked out to be on the safe side. You may have twisted something. I would deffo go a&e, phone your gp or even your surgeons secutery. Better to be safe than sorry

I havent had my op yet but sometimes if i turn to quickly i get sharpe pains in my hips and knees and they pop abd crack very loudly. Im not even sure why its just something thats always happened 😂

I am sure the pain was just a warning and nothing happened...I am considering swimming again right now...to pull in the tummy thay all say is just eating too much...well I am 55...so dont worry...unless the pain presents itself in other ways, lieing down or walking...well you would have posted by now...so dont worry... and give it a rest...or a regrow..internaly...as i see it probably just a small internal tear that was muscular tissue ripping...YUK...but that is going to happen with anything we do to regrow our systems....Keep in touch...Happy NewYear !  ian.

    Thank you for replying.

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow for something else but may mention it if still painful.

It's ok when I'm still, I'm being very careful when moving as the pain has made me aware of my new hip again.

It just seems to be when twisting or moving my hip in certain ways!

Probably a warning to remember it's still new, I have been very blasé about it for the last few weeks. To be honest I often forget I've had it done. I shall use this as an excuse to rest and relax with my feet up 👍🏼

Thats a good idea. I keep saying to peopld as this keeps cropping up that you need to take things slow. Just because everything "feels" better doesnt actually mean it is. It takes a very long time to be completely better.

    Hi Billie,

Yikes .... I had something similar happen to me when I got out of the car, one leg first, leaving the other behinf instead of both at the same time ... Good Lord !!! like you said, sharp pain and even standing on it was so painful - couldn't lift or bend - felt I had to start all over -

My physical therapist checked it and i was told to take it easy for a couple of days - no driving as that would involve lifting that leg -

it got better day by day - rude reminder to still be aware and take it slow(er) - Maybe even use your cane again - no shame in it darling!

Good to hear about all the things you did though !

    Big warm hug

Thank you. I shall rest up and see how it goes. When I pushed on it I kind of twisted at the same time. It's not a movement I think would happen anywhere except in a pool doing that push and turn thing! It feels a little easier this morning.

It was a silly thing to do, I just didn't think. I shall think next time tho that's for sure. The only time I had a pain like it was on forgetting I couldn't cross my legs 3or 4 days post op! Ouch! That REALLY hurt!

Thank you for the reassurance tho, I kept thinking I couldn't have done anything really bad or I wouldn't be able to walk etc but it's nice to be able to pop in here for a little check up 😃

Hi Billie,  it's more likely to be a muscle/tendon injury rather than any damage to yr prostheses.  I'm glad I've read your post as I'm hoping to start back In the The pool over the next week or so. I'm will learn from your experience and take care when pushing off from the sides. Your so right it is very easy to forget that we have got new hips!!  Annie

It's eased off lots now. Rested it overnight and its much better. I'm giving swimming a miss tonight but I shall be back tomorrow, making a point of no twisting and pushing biggrin

My you are very lucky.  I had my THR 12 weeks ago and I still know it.  It is cold here and swimming is out of the question were I live but May we will get the pool open again and I am ready to try swimming or at least walking laps in the pool.  I sure couldn't dance.  So glad you are doing so well with your recovery.  Take it easy and get that pain looked at.

Thank you. I think I have been very lucky with my recovery. I just hope the other hip heals as quickly 😃

Hoping to swim again before long. I am cleared to do so but must locate pool. I am concerned only about the ladder getting in. THIS is a good reminder to be gentle with push offs!! I am glad you posted it. That movement hurt me before my surgery when I'd forget and do it!

I cant wait to start swimming again after my op, its become to painful atm. But the good thing about our pool is that at the shallow end they have these really wide steps and railings instead of the awful ladders

Hi yes our pool has a decent ladder to walk down into the water instead of a ladder type. I went again last night, much more successfully 😃 I just had to keep in mind not to push off! Enjoying the swimming so much tho, I missed it
