Sharp pain in my right buttocks

Posted , 5 users are following.

I had a thr 1 and 1/2 years ago. I now feel a sharp pain deep in my right bun. Now I saw the xrays of my new hip and a big long screw into the pelvic bone so I'm wondering about this sharp pain when I bend. It just started and if it persists I'll call my surgeon but im just cureous if anyone else had a similar thing. I wonder too because I fall a lot ( I wish I could say I'm just clumsy but I believe it's probably the MS) I think I'm picking up my right foot my brain says I'm picking up my right foot but my right foot is not going up it's crazy I know and it doesn't help to have had the bad hip that I had for so long which caused my right leg to atrophy that's why I tried to stay physical now...anyway this is the first post I put on this site so if there's anyone who could shed some light for me I would appreciate it thank you

I would get on to your GP Dr for a start.

I have had two hip replacements and prior to surgery right hip pain was mainly in the buttock region and slighly out to the side, left hip completly diffferent, pain right in fold of groin, in some ways the groin pain was wrose than the buttock pain, and seemed to limit me more  and faster, put up with the buttock pain for years but could still walk until the last few months, groin pain uncapable of walking.

I have found treading water is my far by best exercise , and physio has agreed, I had a six month check up after THR physio was very imprssed  with general strength.

You don't have to worry about tripping while you build up those muscles I also do strecthing exercise, I am using post hip surgery exercises, swinging legs different directions, and using the weight of the watr , faster you go the heavier the water.

I go to a heated pool for my treading water, and make sure I am deep enough so my toes don;t hit the bottom of the pool.

I also use a noodle across my chest and under my arms, tails of noodle sticking out behind me, I see others using the noodle like riding a horse, not to keen on that idea as only adding to spinal compression rather than helping.

I have ruptered discs and well as bulging discs soo stretching my spine very important for me, and the treading water and strecthing has helped.

I allow myself to completly relax and fall as long as I can into the water, totally relieing on the noodle to keep my head up, I am not a swimmer, and never liked the water very much, would always find an excuse to not go in the pool when my kids were younger, never owned a swimming costume for over 20 years, then start bycling slowly, and build up your time, 20 mins for a start was plenty, I can now do over an hour treading away and talking to some of my freinds I have made at the pool, still do not go swimming for fun, but i do enjoy my exercises.

I have 3 long screws in the ball joint to hold in place also posterior approach was done. The glute muscles are cut along the seams for entry and the I band is stretched.

It was painfull in the same area you describe and took many years to get thru. The Physio said posterior approach can cause small microscopic tears in the I band and glute muscle and takes a long time to heel.

It was miserable just to go thru a THR expecting to be done with all the pain after a few months. Then still have glute pain.

It eventually went away after a year or so, as the muscles and I band exercises helped heel . Water therapy was very helpful.

Tendons take so so long to heel.

Those screws look so imitadating on X-ray. But in reality is not the source of pain. I had a bone graft in the pelvis area requiring screws .

Most implants have the option in the THR kits for screws. Many sizes of screws and plugs to seal the screw holes. Mine is press fit non cement.

That was 17 years ago now I need to go in for a poly cup replacement soon. It is fretting causing imbalance in the hip joint thru ear and tear.

Ask your doc for more therapy. Therapy is an essential tool for heeling after THR.

good luck on your journey .

    Peace & Heeling.

Hi Hope4cure, my thr was from the front so they didnt have to cut any muscle or tendons however it is possible its just a pulled muscle or tendon not related to thr. I just let fear sometimes get the best of me. I will see my doc though if it continues meanwhile I will try and keep it rested. Thanks for sharing and well wishes to you smile

There are lots of muscles and tendons in the buttock area, including the gluteus maximus, minimus and medius, so you may have pulled a muscle or tendon. I have a torn gluteus medius that causes pain and a bad limp. Do you limp when you have this pain?

There are many reasons you may be having pain in that area. If it doesn't get better over time with you limiting physical activity, there may be something more serious going on. Your surgeon or physician should be able to help figure this out.

No I don't limp because the the pain is when I go to sit or go to stand do dont feel it when I'm standing. ..I agree my doctor will figure it out and I will surely go if it keeps up... thanks for your comment. ... smile
