Sharp pain in pit of stomach

Hi,

I have been experiencing a sharp pain in the pit of my stomach on and off for quite some time now.

When I refer to "pit of my stomach" it feels as though it is between my rib cage, not too far up from my belly button. The pain is sharp and comes in waves and although I often feel gassy at the same time, it doesn't feel like regular gas pain. I would almost liken it to a shark knife cutting into one particular spot. It will sometimes last for a few hours, or sometimes go away once I've had some water, and sometimes comes out of the blue.

I was chewing peppermint gum today which I thought may be the cause, is there any other foods that trigger similar symptoms in others? Or has anyone experiencing anything similar that may have another cause? If it continues I will go and get tested, but for the time being just wondering what it could possibly be.

Thank you
