Shin pain after revision knee surgery

Posted , 9 users are following.

I had a revision of TKR last December. I have recently upped my walking to try to lose weight but find I have developed quite bad shin pain. GP is going to write to the ortho team but in the meantime, has anyone out there had a similar experience ?

Hi Nicky, I too get pain at the top of my shin when I walk, just where the new joint goes into my shin. I was told it will just take time to heal. I am 16 weeks post op now. My GP is going to check it again in Aug and said if no improvement will refer me back to ortho consultant. Let me know how you get on as it is annoying. Walking is what I miss most and can only manage 15 mins without suffering. Best wishes. S x

The latest Ortho I have seen says, the pain could go away over time, but if not, he could replace the tibial portion of the implant with one with a shorter stem. The thought of having more surgery on this leg is very upsetting and I'm certainly not rushing into it.

I agree Irma, much as i am glad i have had my knee replaced I really do not want to go through the rehab again coming this far especially when other one needs done next year.

This is common it seems. It sounds like you my be overdoing it a little. Make sure you have shoes that are intended to be used for this type activity. If not you could be getting shin splints. This is a where the muscle is being slightly torn from the bone and badly brusied. Rest, icing, anti-inflammatory over the counter drugs like a nadir type med (aleve) is used.

Drop back on the activity level for a few.days and treat it with lots of rest including elevation.

Hi Nicky. Yes I have the same problem. I had my revision knee replacement 8 months ago. I walk a lot, so I'm not sure if the reason for the pain is my walking. I walk an average of 8,000 steps per day. I just think the reason we got surgery is so we could at least walk, since we can't run or do some things. I have a lot of pain in my shin to the point that I now have a limp which I did not have before the revision. my first T K R only lasted 4 years for me so I'm very disappointed to have gone through two surgeries on that leg and to be in pain and limping. do we really have to walk less?

    Hi Nicky,

I too, had revision on both knees. Right one seems to be doing ok, but my left knee has the shin pain. I'm also getting weird feelings down that leg that to me feel like electric shocks. I'm thinking perhaps there is nerve damage since it seems to me that's what nerve pain would be. I used to walk 1-2 miles a day before this happened, but all I can do now is ride a stationary bike. Went to the ortho a couple months ago & he just said this pain could be from a lot of things and dismissed me with a shot. Of course, the shot did no good at all. I have an appointment with him next Tuesday and will press him for possibly scheduling ct-scan or nerve test so I know what's causing all this discomfort. I do not intend to do another surgery but I would like to know what I'm dealing with. Both of my knees had revisions within 2 years of the original surgery. I wish I would never have done replacements. This is no way to live.
