Shingles from shingles?? I think so.

Hello! I am a 34 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with shingles. I have had them for about a week and am quite uncomfortable, but not miserable. I have had some stomache pains for a few days that I believe are associated.

One problem I have is in all the information on the net and from doctors they stress the point \"you can NOT get shingles from someone with shingles\"... well, I disagree. My mother is a non-hodgkin's lymphoma patient who was diagnosed with shingles about two weeks ago. I live by her and help her and I find it hard to believe my shingles didn't come from being exposed to her!

Just wanted to let others know.

A colleague of mine, another teacher, has just had shingles and we've had an outbreak of chickenpox amongst the children. A coincidence? - I think not!

I agree, my friends daughter had chickenpox and I got shingles. A colleage in my office possibly caught if from me or the children she saw at the weekend with chickenox. The following week her grandmother had shingles. I am sure there is a trail of infection.

I have heard of a child who was having extra tuition. The tutor had shingles and said lessons could continue because it isn't infectious. The child had never had chicken-pox. The child got ill - with shingles!

I had shingles about 15 years ago. As far as I know the way it works is this... if you have had chicken pox at any time (even if it was never noticed! which can happen when your'e young) then, because the virus stays dormant in your nerve system, you are liable to develope shingles later (especially if you get rundown with virus infections like flu etc). Although a shingles sufferer can infect another person(who has never had it before) with chickenpox, they are themselves immune to a second infection. However, a bout of shingles can result in repeated facial neuralgia (mostly again when rundown) which can be painful but , in my experience, only occurs occassionally...3/4 times a year and only lasts a day. I understand that some people, and especially older people, experience more regular post shingles complaints.

you can get shingles and chickenpox more than once!!! Ive had chicken pox twice now and shingles 7 times int he last 6 months! It lies dormant in your system once you have had chickenpox. If you have shingles you can infect the other person with chickenpox! The doctors told me you cant pass on shingles but i think in your case it sounds like you have picked it up from your mum because if you have had chickenpox then it probably has reactivated the ZVZ virus. They also say you cannot have shingles before chickenpox this is a lie and an old wives tales which I would never believe because i have proved these wrong according to the doctors and immunologists im seeing, when i was 6 months old i had shingles then had chickenpox when i was 3! I suffer with the post-infection problems, such as itching where my scars are bio oil is good for reducing scaring and calamine for itching!
