That’s how mine began for one week before the rash came out.  I could count 15 seconds in between each rumbling pain. Went to emergency and they said it was pinched nerve and gave me a shot of tramadol and gave me a prescription for pregabalin  to take at bedtime but didn’t help me through the day. One week later I was back in emergency for another shot of tramadol and the rash was just coming out and was so sensitive that I couldn’t stand my clothes to touch and they told me it was contact dermatitis..,,,it was two days later that I was diagnosed with shingles. Which lasted for months and I ended up with PHN which I still suffer and it has been ten months. The hard pain was for the first few weeks then after that it was painful and usually an extra strength Tylenol would help
