Shingles post-Opt

I had my ACL on my left leg repaired last week Friday, two days later I developed Shingles on my left side under my breast line and wtaped around to my back. I went to the ER and got the anti-viral meds and pain meds and I'm taking them as scheduled. Part of my post opt medication is asprin for blood clots. I read some where else that I shouldbt be taking Asprin with Shingles, although it is part of my post-opt instructions. I still continued to take it. Now I'm developing a pain on my left chest and on my back. I'm concerned because it's around my heart. But I dont want to be a hypercondriac. The pain comes as I inhale and goes when I exhale and sometimes sharp pain out of no where. Should I be concerned. I dont want to create more doc bills than necessary. But I also dont want to die. Please advise ASAP.

Hi Sasiya!
You should call the orthopedic surgeon and tell him you contracted shingles, are aware that aspirin is contraindicated in patients who have the varicella virus (shingles) due to the increased risk of Reyes Syndrome, even in adults. Ask him what does he want you to do to prevent blood clots.
Can you see your regular physician (primary care doctor)? Usually, pain that occurs when you inhale and exhale is caused by inflammation of the pleura or lining of the lungs and thorax, or movement of the chest wall, in your case, due to shingles. The big questions to ask is" are you short of breath, having palpitations, having chest pressure over your breast bone, or having radiation of pain?
I would see your primary care physician to evaluate you, and also s-he can help sort out with the orthopedic surgeon what you are to use for blood clot prophylaxis (Deep Vein Thrombosis & Pulmonary Emboli
Prophylaxis.). Both of them know you, your health history, and together can advise you. You are not being a hypochondriac. You are being wise to ask these questions.
I am a Nurse Practitioner, a former PACU/ICU RN, and have cared for all sorts of patients with different problems.
I am sorry you are dealing with shingles, especially post-operatively. There is a much higher rate of Shingles after surgery, BTW.
Best Wishes
Merry Juliana
