Shoes after big toe fusion

I am 6-weeks post big toe fusion in both feet for arthritis. Everything seems to be healing nicely and the surgeon is pleased.
But, now that I am allowed to wear actual shoes I am really struggling to get shoes to fit. I have some adjustable sandals which are ok but even my slightly too big before surgery and most comfortable trainers now squash my feet.
Before I go and spend a fortune on new shoes, is it normal for my feet to be bigger now than before surgery (not just longer but my left toe now sticks out slightly to the side and shoes feel tight across the joint (I guess where the screws are)?

Altra running shoes all have a large toe box.

I have just had a toe fusion yesterday. For a few months before I struggled with shoes as I had a bone spur on top of an already large bunion and my joint was arthritic. I struggled with shoes, as even soft trainers pressed down to hard on my joint. I found that "cosyfeet " do the best shoes.. extra wide fitting and they have a stretchy range, where the top of the shoe is made of material similar to neoprene, also some are seamless at the front of the foot. I found the seams on shoes caused more pain. They aren't cheap, but considering the money I wasted on other shoes that hurt, they are worth it. they also send postage labels so if they aren't suitable you can return them at no cost. I'm hoping they will be fine when I can get rid of my boot!
