Shoes after Orif surgery.

Hi, I am 11 weeks post Orif surgery and have beens given the go ahead to try wearing shoes. I can fully weight bare both standing and walking while wearing the boot but can only stand in shoes...i cannot fully weightbare in shoes yet tho i am close and the same in bare feet. My question is what is the best shoes to wear ? I have googled it but keep getting American sites and i am in the UK. I usually wore uggs before my injury or trainers so any suggestions on comfortable supportive shoes would be great . What shoes did everyone find worked for them?

    Hi,

I waited until I was full weight bearing with bare feet and walking well before I wore shoes. I wanted to make sure that my shoes didnt create weak areas in my foot from too much support. I had lost all of my arch and it took several weeks before those muscles were retrained. Once I was confidently walking barefoot for about a month I started wearing trainers. I'm in the states so I cant help you with a brand. Sorry. Also my foot size changes from the swelling and I was a different size 6 months after ORIF than I was 9 months. I am now 14 months out and I can wear most shoes comfortably and my gate is normal. My ankle is still a little weak and high heals are difficult to wear. Range of motion is a little tight at my limits but I can do almost anything without pain/discomfort. I did have all of my hardware removed at 10 months post op and that helped my recovery alot.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately my doctor has said he wants me out of the boot and in shoes full time within the next two weeks...i guess i should concentrate on the bare foot weight baring first but at my hospital the instructions are very vague...the only point he was very clear on was the shoes. Im just hoping i can get a good comfortable stable pair of shoes to ease the process.

      Hi,

I am about 2 weeks behind you. I have my first physio today. Still in boot and on crutches. Doing excersises to loosen up the stiffness, have heard on here from folks that sketcher trainers are comfortable with thick socks. I'm in the UK also, but live in California. I agree about the hospitals here, Information isn't clear. Doctor's have a communication problem it seems to me. Go easy, and good luck.

Thank you , I had heard skechers go walk shoes are good for this so i may look into them. Yes instructions are vague and frustrating....i feel like I'm having to work it all out myself. But saying that I am making progress...just don't want to mess it up:)
