Shoes...sandals...first metatarsal osteotomy

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hi folks

I am now in my 5th week post op . Had first metatarsal osteotomy right foot and some arthritis removed. I have just started wearing my MBT sandals which at last gives me a balanced stand again. After surgery I had a bandaged foot and a big wedged Velcro shoe to wear which made moving about very awkward as my body was out of balance. The MBT sandals are velcro fastening and comfortable but I have to say my foot is still slightly swollen, but improving.

It has made such a difference reading this site and stopped me panicking that something has gone wrong, patience, time and elevation seems to be the three words you have to remember.

I am wondering if anyone else is still walking on their heel or side of foot still, I am trying to walk normal but the ball of my foot is still quite sore and my big toe still does not move much.

Does anyone else have the same problems.

Great reading the posts, keeps you sane and makes the day the bit brighter, hate being trapped in the house, there is only so times you can walk around the house and garden.

Good luck to you all...remember Patience, Time and Elevation.

    Hi Billos

Yea I think it is the fear, I had a great podiatrist surgeon and all he has said try move the big toe backwards and forwards and walk BUT listen to your body and look at your foot and be sensible.

At my 2 week appointment the bandages came off and stitches came out, he then put a clean dressing and bandage on then had my foot X-rayed to make sure all was well, my next appointment is. It until 25th April. I did panic last week as I thought I might be doing something wrong as my big toe is not bending much and I must be doing something wrong, but he said to stop worrying do as much as you can and he will see me on the 25th.

I am now noticing that when I try to bend the toe it is getting easier but there is still swelling around the first and second joint but I am thinking positive.

My big toe seems quite flexible but I notice that my second toe is less so. Also, there is still swelling and tightness where the tissue was cut between the big and second toes toes.

    Does anyone else notice this?

I have an appointment this afternoon and presume my foot will be x-rayed so I may get some answers then.

I am six weeks post surgery.

Thanks for all the great comments.

    Hi Beth

Let us know how you got on with your appointment.

I often sit wiggling my toes and can see the big toe move but not a lot, hopefully time will tell and movement improve.

At least I can walk in my MBT sandals and not the big wedge Velcro shoe the hospital gives you, not far but little and often.

Love this site, so reassuring sometimes

    Thanks Sandra.

It's so nice to know that there other people going through the exact same things isn't it.

I am going to ask the doctor about MBT sandals.

Hi ladies. Yes I get worried as I still have quitea swollen bunion joint and yes Beth still swelling tween the big and next toe where the second incision was made. I would say Eileen that my feet look better than a couple if weeks ago but at this stage (5 weeks tomorrow) I can't know how straight my feet will be ultimately and how much the big. toes will still incline. I've been quite upset re this over the weeks imagining some perfectly straight feet and realising that probably won't happen. However, I did take a before photo and I can definitely see a difference tho it's taken me awhile to see it. Bit like anorexics can't see their real shape I couldn't see my new one which of course is still re-forming. It's another call for patience I'm afraid. I did speak to a physio today who said it will look better when all the swelling goes but if course that can take weeks/months to resolve.

Apologies for typing errors am using my phone which is a bit small! Hope you're all well and resting up. Have a good eve. 👣👣VJ

Hi All- thanks for the support. Of course our feet are more swollen now than they will be but it seems to me that the bump is getting more pronounced as my foot becomes less swollen!! It doesn't help that I didn't take the very important ''before'' photo so I have nothing to compare my feet with except each other. I will say though that my right foot looks great but it didn't need anything like the work that my left foot did. If there's any lesson to be taken from this it's that you need to get your bunions seen to BEFORE they get too bad!

Beth- I have a hard bit between my big and next toe where the incision was - don't know what that is so will have to ask next Thursday when I have my next appointment.

Hey ho- even more patience still needed- I may have used up most of mine............... rolleyes

Eileen. That hard bit may be a stitch knot. I had one that the nurse overlooked and managed to remove it myself. Yes patience is having to stretch all the time isn't it? Sometimes surgery is only done when the feet get really bad. Postcode lottery too I think! Take care. 👣👣V

Ta VJ- can't see anything though so I'll just have to wait till next week. The NHS in Tayside seemed to be quite receptive to dealing with bunions and they were more than happy to sort both feet for me- they have a consultant who is a foot and ankle specialist and a standard waiting list of around 6 to 8 weeks so maybe this is one of these places that its easier to get your bunions done. Have a good evening!

ok, so just got back from my 6 week appointment and all my questions answered. The doctor thought my foot looked good and what he would expect and that the toe will not lean in any more than it is now. I noticed that my bump looked less pronounced than it had seemed to me at home so maybe it is one of those body dysmorphia things. He certainly didn't think it was a problem so maybe my husband was right.

I need to massage the bump between my toes using lotion or oil to reduce it - I think it might be scar tissue but you should ask your doctor Eileen in case it is something else.

I can wear whatever shoes are comfortable and fit (not high heels) and gradually build up walking around bearing in mind I will still get swelling if I do too much. If the foot gets uncomfortable to use the boot. again It is likely to be up and down progress which is good to know.

I asked for physio because of my tendonitis and I begin that next week.

All in all feel pretty positive and now just need to sort out broken washing machine!

have a great night everyone - the sun is finally shining here today.

Glad all went well Beth and will ask about the odd bit between my toes- it may well be scar tissue. It doesn't really bother me but good to know what it is. Interesting to hear what you're allowed to do.......hopefully that will be me next week. Good luck with the washing machine!

Beth.......pleased all went well for you.

Bio Oil was recommended to me it certainly seems to be helping, I use this at least twice a day massaging my foot all over.

Maybe you can relax more knowing everything is going to plan.

Enjoy the rest of the evening.

    Thanks for the good wishes.

I will try the bio oil.

    Best, Beth

am now going to try to walk on my whole foot not like a crab! Whoo hoo!

Let me know how new walk goes👣

I try very hard to walk normal but I think it is fear at the moment that is stopping me. I think once I have my 6 week check up and the consultant confirms everything is ok and I cannot cause any injury or harm to my foot I might feel happier.

Take care I await next chapter soon.

    Hi all,

i am so pleased to find this thread. I am having a big toe fusion and lump removed due to arthritis on 31st August and must admit to being very nervous and worried about the outcome and recovery time. I realise everyone is different but can't really comprehend how the pain and disruption to daily life will actually affect me. Luckily I don't have dependants to worry about and have a wonderful partner to help. I shall continue to take all your comments and advice on board, especially about shoes, and try to prepare myself. Dancing lessons will have to wait!!

    thank you
