Shooting pain attacks in right groin area - female

About me: 43 years old (44 soon)

Gender: Female

Weight: 9 stones

Height: 5'4"

Births: 3 children (now in late teens) by caesarean sections

Occupation: Admin

Hobbies: avid weightlifter for about 5 years but given up about 1.5 years ago

Daily exercise: dog walk for about 15 minutes

Problem: About 10 years ago I had, what I call my first attack. I was sat down on the grass in the park and got myself up first on my bent right leg to push the rest of my weight up on that leg. Suddenly, I lost my footing as the shooting pain my groin area was so severe I could have passed out. I was in absolute agony and had to keep completely motionless on the ground for what seemed like an eternity. Laying on my back, after about 5 minutes, I slowly tried to rock my leg in towards me and out away from me. When I dropped my leg away from me, I felt relief although after each attack the residual dull ache was present for about a day. Once I managed to get up on my feet, I found weight bearing on my right leg to be painful, to the point of having to limp for a while. After a while, the pain would go and I would then be able to walk normally. I didn't get this pain again for a good few years and recently, about 3 years ago, it started again. I went to my GP who sent me for an X ray which showed no abnormality. He then referred me physio and they couldn't detect anything either. The Physiotherapist felt that if I wore a hip brace (pull my hips tightly together) that may help. However, there was no hip brace available for a UK size 10. Recently, in the past few months, I get these attacks each time I am not "careful". By careful I mean, I can never put my weight on my right leg to support the rest of me, I can't swing my right leg too high for instance while crossing over a high gate on my dog walks, when I get out of my car, I have to swing both legs round and out of the car touching the ground and then lifting myself up on both feet (like old people do when they get out of cars). I am absolutely fed up with my condition. I worry about exercising, about gardening, about some type of work at my employers' as I had an attack that lasted 15 minutes only about a month ago. My life is miserable and my passion and hobby of weightlifting and exercise is on the backburner. I have no get up and go anymore to exercise when in the recent past I used to exercise almost daily and looking forward to it. What could be wrong? I have been reading up on femoral hernias but I am not quite sure if that is what I have. I have no lumps in my groin but I do have a lump in my left armpit (which I have had for about 6 months now) which has been investigated by bloods through my GP and haeamtologists who have both felt it was nothing to worry about. Any advice would be highly valued.

Thanks.

    Hello there.trving

I hope you are feeling better. Im 46. I went into hospital 2 days ago with similar pain, top of left groin and shooting down side of thigh. Husband took to AnE where I was given morphin. All it did was take the edge off the pain, moving in any way was excrutiating. Drs putting it down to possible swelling that may be have been caused by a fall I had in the town centre 4 days ago. Xrays blood tests showed nothing.

But Im not quite sure if this pain is due to the fall. As last week I found myself experiencing the same but on much less painful scale. Im on painkillers now, not recovered totally..when I walk I feel as though my leg will give and I will collapse so Im on crutches. I dont want I can say to help you as Im looking for answers myself rolleyes I pray you recover soon.

I don't know if I've experienced a miracle or not, but it sure appears so as my pain has gradually faded, and I'm not hurting anymore! I just have to be careful not to twist and step to quickly. I'll say a prayer for you and wish I could give you some tangible advice.

Lucky you! You should take advantage of the miracle to do more exercises as only sedentary people get these problems with Sciatica. If you strengthen the mescles slowly walka little more then you will have a chance of the miracle lasting. The less you do the more chance of a re-incidence. meanwhile Gratitude and well done!

Good point about the exercise! I bought a Simply Fit Board, which is low impact and improves balance. I just about fell off the thing the first few times, but I'm getting the hang of it and can feel my hip getting stronger each time I use it. I can only stay on it for a minute at a time, but it feels good to be doing something healthy for my body.

Oh, DEAR! I'm not so sure about what you're doing. I've consulted with the best physiotherapists in my country and been told NOT to do anything with balancing involved. No vibrational platforms either. If you fall slightly badly you can cripple yourself and do endless damage. Whatever exercises you do should be supervised at first. After a qualified person has told you it's safe you're OK. Sounds really dangerous to me. Walking a little is the first thing and trying to think of anything but pain! i'd talk about doing what you're doing to a professional. Anyway , good luck!

Hi there, what is the latest on your condition?  I am here for the first time because I seem to have EXACTLY the same as you.  It started with the sudden pain just a few times a year, but yesterday I had it about 5 times and now I am terrified to put any weight on my right leg or to swing round.  When 'it' happens I cry out in pain it is quite involuntary, and everyone looks round at me!   I haven't even started on going to the doctor, I have just been sitting here all day wondering what to do !

Sounds like you've got a spinal condition. The Sciatic Nerve is the biggest nerve in the body, goes along the spine to the legs, down the legs,  and when it's being pinched somewhere , (Stenosis, Herniated Disc etc. ) these symptoms occur. generally in people who don't exercise sufficiently or are overweight or who have jobs where the joints and spine are under stress. You have to see an Orthopedist and get an MRI Scan , possibly X-Rays, then possibly take medication which is temporary relief while you have physiotherapy or geta cortisone injection or operate. Operations have a high incidence of failure, 37% get worse, or pain comes back or  other complications. Physiotherapy 87% get better. Do something! Good luck . try your GP. first.

    Hi

Was reading your post and I have exactly the same symptoms as you described.

I am 30 year old male and I am worried sick as the pain is unbareable and the doctors have said I e stretched or tore a muscle and maybe it's muscle spasms.

I can't at the moment walk or put weight on my right foot because the pain I get in my groin.

Did you get diagnosed with any thing for your symptoms ? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated thank you

Hi John,  I found out that I had a tear in that area and a physio helped me to deal with it.   The best way to heal is complete rest with the leg up and to walk with crutches so that you are not using the affected leg at all.  It took 6 weeks to heal but I'm okay now, no more pain.

HI, I think you should get a second opinion from a  specialist. Because IF it's a spine Sciatica problem the less you move the worse it gets. You should go to an Orthopediist a physiotherapist isn't qualified to diagnose nor is a Chiropractor. You need an MRI Scan to make sure what you've got. It's like Russina Roulette playing around with pain in the groin which could be Herniated Disc, pinched Sciatic nerve etc. Just resting and using critches could make you much worse! Second opinion! Good luck.

Found out my problem after 6 years of pain.

I have arthritis in my hip. The orthopedic hip specialist said half of the people he treats have been told they have back issues or sciatica/stenosis. He said he has even had people who have had back surgery only to find out it did not relieve the pain, and it turn out to be their hip.

if I can advise anyone...I would say push for at least an x-ray of your hip before you have any surgery.

my pain was in my right, front groin, and has progressively gotten worse until I have lost strength in my leg.

Have you seen a neurologist? It sounds like bursitis in your hips and a pinched sciatica.
